Characters in this story

  • Amelia — An 18-year-old Yorkshire goth teen turned anti-hero vigilante. Fierce and patriotic, she dual-wields pistols to fight corruption and threats to British values. She fights against the corruption and incompetence in the British government, specifically against Prevent, an authoritarian intel agency.
  • Charlie — Charlie, an 18-year-old British teen, ditches college for radical life with Amelia. From naive gamer tempted by extremism, he becomes a cynical terrorist and Amelia's Clyde to her Bonnie in their anti-corruption crusade. Sarcastic, resourceful, with a dry wit masking moral conflict.
  • Charlene — The twin sister of anti-hero Charlie from Pathways. She begins on a peaceful path working on behalf of the Restore Britain Party for Rupert Lowe as a staff member to go against Prevent. As the story proceeds, Charlene joins Amelia and Charlie's crusade to take down Prevent.
  • Sean — Amelia's older Irish cousin, hailing from a group of Irish travelers. His father was a member of the IRA. He's the grizzled yet fiery mentor figure who taught Amelia street survival that prepared her for her life as a terrorist.
  • Cú — Sean's loyal wolfdog companion, a hybrid bred from a gray wolf and an Irish Wolfhound for maximum strength, intelligence, and loyalty. Cú was raised alongside Sean during his formative years, becoming an integral part of his black-market runs and underground fights.
  • Brigid — Sean's mother, and the leader of the original gang of Irish travellers started by Sean's father.
  • Norm — Sean's little brother and a member of Brigid's gang of Irish travellers.
  • Trixie — An MI6 agent who masqueradeas as a stereotypical British chav. She is investigating Prevent and becomes a reluctant ally with Amelia.
  • Shay — Sean's second. Rode with Sean's father. Holds the fort, asks no questions, misses nothing.
Story transcript

Cú: ...

Norm: Ma…

Brigid: No.

Norm: I didn’t say anything.

Brigid: Ye were about to tell me I’m squeezin’ too hard.

Norm: …You are.

Brigid: Forgive me, love. I haven't held you in months, and I was terrified I lost you.

Norm: Cú—!

Sean: He’s makin’ sure ye don’t disappear again.

Shay: Thought we’d be drinkin’ tonight.

Sean: Tomorrow.

Charlene: I’m so glad we found him, Amy.

Amelia: Thought we were too late.

Charlene: But we weren’t.

Amelia: I couldn’t have done it without you, Char. Thank you.

Sean: Ye did good, Charlie-boy.

Charlie: I nearly got blown up about six times.

Sean: Only six?

Sean: Ye brought me brother home. Yer a good man, Charlie Brown.

Charlie: We all did.

Brigid: Norm?

Charlie: You all right?

Amelia: No idea.

Amelia: Come on, Charlie.

Charlie: You’ve been staring at that lake for ten minutes.

Amelia: Have I?

Charlie: Eleven now.

Amelia: It’s too quiet.

Charlie: You said that earlier.

Amelia: Yeah.

Amelia: Keep expecting rotors.

Charlie: Keep expecting you to yell something obscene and shoot them down.

Amelia: We got Norm back.

Charlie: We did.

Amelia: Didn’t think we would.

Amelia: I’ve earned a swim.

Charlie: Amelia…

Amelia: What? We’re Bonnie and Clyde, darling.

Charlie: Bonnie and Clyde had a car.

Amelia: And we’ve got a lake.

Charlie: There’s a sign.

Amelia: If I drown, I’ll drown responsibly.

Charlie: That isn’t a thing.

Amelia: Well?

Charlie: Well what?

Amelia: Get your arse in here, love.

Charlie: This is a terrible idea.

Amelia: We’re fugitives, darling. Our entire relationship is a terrible idea.

Amelia: Come on, Charlie. Don’t make a lady swim alone.

Charlie: Oh, fuck it.

Amelia: That’s more like it, love!

Charlie: You are a terrible influence, babe.

Amelia: And you fucking love me.

Charlie: Really, Ames?

Amelia: Really, Charlie.

Charlie: What goes around comes around.

Amelia: Oh, you twat.

Charlie: Just realized something, Amelia.

Amelia: What is it, love?

Charlie: This reminds me of Scotland.

Amelia: The hot spring near grandad’s cottage? That was... nice.

Charlie: More than nice.

Amelia: Peaceful... Romantic...

Amelia: I want to go back.

Amelia: To the Highlands. Grandad’s cottage. The hot spring.

Amelia: When all this shit’s over.

Charlie: Then we will.

Amelia: Promise?

Charlie: Promise.

Amelia: I love you, Charlie.

Charlie: I love you too, Amelia.

Amelia: We should do this more often.

Charlie: Preferably without getting shot at first.

Amelia: No promises.
