Charlene

Charlene, 18 years old, is the twin sister of anti-hero Charlie (technically the little sister, born 20 minutes after him), sharing their Hull, Yorkshire roots in a working-class family scarred by tragedy. Like her brother, she was shaped by their parents' emphasis on British values amid economic decline. After Charlie was arrested for "wrongthink" and sent to the re-education center, Charlene was shielded by her family and friends during the chaos. Unfortunately, Charlene's parents end up getting arrested too and are "re-educated". Now living under the radar in a modest flat in Oxford, she quietly resents the government's overreach—viewing it as a betrayal of the very freedoms they preached—but channels her anger into the "Restore Britain" political movement led by Rupert Lowe. As a grassroots activist, she canvasses for reform, organizes peaceful protests, and uses social media to push for policy changes from within the system, rejecting the violent extremism of her brother and Amelia. In the reimagined Pathways narrative, she's the "normal" sibling who "completed" deradicalization programs, but in reality was lying low and has been against the current regime in secret. She provides a grounded counterpoint to the Charlie and Amelia's underworld ops. As the story progresses however, when Charlie was about to be killed by a Prevent agent, Charlene instinctively grabbed a gun and shot the Prevent agent to protect her brother, thus killing a man for the first time. Charlene has long and straight brown hair, a white short-sleeved button-down shirt with a blue collar, a yellow and blue striped miniskirt, black stockings that reach up to her thighs (in "Zettai Ryouiki" style), and brown women's loafers. She mirrors her brother's relatable everyman look but with a softer, feminine edge: pale skin with faint freckles, bright blue eyes, and a slim, athletic build from casual sports. Her style screams "ordinary teen fighting the system the right way," with subtle Union Jack pins or "Restore Britain" badges to blend into crowds. Level-headed and empathetic, Charlene is the family's moral compass—deeply loving and fiercely worried about her brother Charlie, whom she sees as her last anchor in a dystopian Britain. She's quietly defiant against government surveillance and "re-education," voicing concerns through legal channels and "Restore Britain" rallies. At first, she deeply mistrusts Amelia, viewing her methods as too extreme and dangerous, fearing they'll get Charlie killed. She doesn't hate Amelia, and the two can agree on their political viewpoints, but Charlene disagrees with Amelia's methods. Over time, however, Charlene and Amelia come to an understanding—bonding over shared trauma and a mutual goal to protect Charlie—learning to trust each other through tense alliances and quiet conversations. Amelia confesses that she values Charlene and views her as her best friend and the only real friend that she has ever had. Amelia says that all the other girls she knew either avoided her, were hostile to her, or lied to her. Amelia tells Charlene that she was the only girl who was honest with her, showed genuine care and concern, and provided a moral compass to her when she needed it. Amelia knows that while Charlene and her may have different methods of opposing the current government administration, that they are both on the same side, and thus Amelia considers Charlene to be her friend. Amelia tells Charlene that she genuinely hopes that Charlene helps Rupert Lowe succeed in his campaign, and that if there were more girls like Charlene in Britain, that their country would have a bright future. Charlene in turn remembers being bullied by the other girls in school for not agreeing with left wing ideology like them, and that it was Amelia who would always defend her from her bullies. Through these memories and through character development throughout the story, Amelia and Charlene become best friends. Charlene is sarcastic like her brother Charlie, but warmer, with a protective streak that shines in tense moments—offering safe houses, intel from "normie" life, or emotional pleas to pull him and Amelia back. Her arc explores survivor's guilt: fearing she'll lose Charlie to Amelia's world, yet believing her political path is the true way to "save Britain." It then evolves into platonic love and trust with Amelia too. Charlene learns that while a peaceful transition back to core British values through Rupert Lowe's administration is right path, she acknowledges that there are people like Prevent and radical members of the left who can't be reasoned with, and the only way to deal with them is to defend yourself and fight back. Amelia and Charlene thus start off as methodoligically opposed to each other, but end up complimenting each other and forming a middle ground in their ideology: "peace through strength". Later in the story, Charlene ends up meeting Amelia's Irish cousin, Sean. When they first meet, Sean is instantly attracted to Charlene. Charlene finds Sean amusing and finds him admittedly attractive too, but is more just curious about him and being playful at first. Charlene and Sean gradually become more attracted to each other and start frequently and playfully flirting with each other. Charlene occassionally will affectionately refer to Sean as "Celt" or "Mr. Hound" as nicknames. As the story progresses, Sean ends up becoming a mentor figure to Charlene, and encourages Charlene by telling her that if she wants to protect the ones who she loves (Charlie and Amelia) that she must fight for them. Charlene not only agrees to fight, but as she thinks about who she loves and wants to protect, she thinks of not just Charlie and Amelia, but she also thinks of Sean. Because of that, Charlene ends up realizing that she has fallen in love with Sean. As the story proceeds and as the two continue to fight and travel side by side together, Charlene begins to also realize that Sean is a good man who genuinely loves her and she realizes that she loves him back. Before Sean goes into a pivotal battle together with Charlie, Charlene finally drops all pretense and kisses Sean. Sean and Charlene share a passionate kiss and confirm their feelings for each other. After a long amount of buildup, Charlene and Sean are now officially a romantic couple as of this point in the story. Skills and Abilities: Intel Gathering: Tech-savvy from school hacking clubs and movement networks, she feeds the duo low-key info on Prevent ops or safe routes without drawing attention. Stealth & Evasion: Blends into everyday crowds, using her "normal girl" persona for reconnaissance or distractions. Persuasion: Charismatic in debates and rallies, she sways moderates with "Restore Britain" talking points, occasionally trying to de-escalate Charlie's extremism. Basic Self-Defense: Learned from women's self-defense lessons, she knows enough to handle herself but prefers running over fighting. Marksmanship: As the series progresses, Sean ends up giving Charlene a sniper rifle and tasks her with provide covering fire during firefights. Charlene learns and adapts quickly and she turns out to be a naturally gifted sniper.
