Charlie

Background: Charlie is an 18-year-old British teen from Hull, Yorkshire, starting college amid economic hardship and social isolation. In Pathways: Navigating the Internet and Extremism, he's the player avatar, a blank-slate youth tempted by online radicalization through scenarios like hate speech in gaming chats or Amelia's anti-immigration videos. Reimagined as an anti-hero, Charlie abandons his mundane life after siding with Amelia, escaping his "deradicalization" to join her underground fight against corrupt elites and cultural erosion. Influenced by Rock from Black Lagoon, he transitions from a naive everyman to a diabolical terrorist in their Bonnie-and-Clyde duo, handling deals, intel and escapes while grappling with his darkening morals. As the story continues, Charlie fights more on the front lines like Amelia. Charlie also has a younger twin sister named Charlene, who went to the same school as him and Amelia. Charlie was separated from his family after being arrested by Prevent. His parents were arrested and "re-educated" (brainwashed) by Prevent, and unfortunately he was forced to abandon a normal life. Charlie's younger twin sister Charlene is now the only family that he has left, so Charlie is deeply protective of Charlene. Appearance: Charlie retains his original relatable look: pale skin with freckles, messy dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a slim build. He dresses casually in a blue hoodie, jeans, and sneakers, but adds tactical touches like a hidden holster or bandana for anonymity. Personality: Initially impressionable and conflicted like in the game, Charlie's personality shifts under Amelia's influence, mirroring Rock's cynicism: humble and idealistic at first, he grows sarcastic, manipulative, and nihilistic, prioritizing survival and loyalty over ideals. He's the calm to her fire—avoiding needless violence but ruthless when cornered, with a dry wit that masks inner turmoil about his radical path. Their relationship is tense yet magnetic, like Revy and Rock, blending banter, attraction, and codependency. Charlie is fiercely in love with Amelia, and is deeply protective of his younger twin sister, Charlene. Whenever Amelia or his sister Charlene is in trouble, Charlie steels his nerves and is willing to kill anyone who threatens Amelia or Charlene. Skills and Abilities: Negotiation: Masterful at talking down threats or brokering alliances, using his "everyman" charm to infiltrate groups. Intel Gathering: Tech-savvy from gaming, he hacks social media for propaganda and plans, adapting Rock's corporate smarts to street ops. His hacking abilities improve significantly as the series progresses, and are inspired by Benny from Black Lagoon, though Charlie's parsonality is still closest to Rock. Endurance: High tolerance for chaos, with quick thinking in chases; multilingual hints (English, basic British, Irish, and foreign slang) aid global dealings. Combat Support: At first, non-frontline but resourceful—improvising distractions or escapes, complementing Amelia's firepower. As the story progresses, Charlie's killer instinct grows and he begins fighting more on the front lines. Role and Arc: As Amelia's partner-in-crime, Charlie handles logistics in their vigilante crusade against "invasions" and corruption, from protests turned heists to evading Prevent agents. His arc explores moral descent: starting reluctant, he embraces the thrill, questioning if he's saving Britain or becoming the extremist the game warned against. Their Revy-Rock dynamic drives the story—mutual dependence amid violence, with Charlie as the "silver bullet" to her demons, ultimately forging a chaotic bond in a world of betrayal. He and Amelia are in love with each other and are fiercely loyal to each other. Charlie also partners with his younger twin sister Charlene, who he is deeply protective of. After learning from Charlene that their parents were "re-educated" (brainwashed) and have disappeared, Charlie vows to also protect his little sister Charlene since she is the only family that he has left. As the series progresses, Charlie meets Amelia's Irish cousin Sean. Charlie is at first annoyed by Sean's flirting with his sister Charlene, but Charlie later realizes that Sean really does care about Charlene. After a while, Sean earns Charlie's trust and they become friends. After fighting together long enough and learning a lot of Sean, Charlie proves himself on the battlefield and can now fight alongside Amelia and Sean. While he's nowhere near as skilled on the front lines as Amelia or Sean, Charlie has vastly improved and can follow Amelia and Sean's pace. This has deepened his relationship with Amelia. Furthermore, Charlie and Sean are now brothers in arms. Like Amelia, Charlie absolutely despises Mildred Graves. Mildred Graves was responsible for ruining Charlie's life by reporting him and his family for extremist behavior after Charlie defended Amelia in class from bullies in defiance of Mildred Graves. Deep down, Charlie is a young man who just wanted an ordinary and peaceful together with Amelia. He is just a regular guy who was pushed too far and radicalized by Prevent and Mildred Graves for ruining his life. Charlie doesn't consider Amelia as the one who "radicalized" him. For Charlie, he views Amelia as the one who set him free and showed him the truth. During the pivotal battle at the HMS Erebus, Amelia nearly beats Graves to death in a fistfight, but Charlie stops Amelia from losing control. Amelia and Charlie embrace, reaffirming their love for one another. Graves then tries to shoot Charlie and Amelia but fails, so Amelia and Charlie shoot Graves in the head, killing Mildred Graves.
