Character Background
Background:
Sean, age 21, is Amelia's older cousin, hailing from a group of traveling Irish migrants (known disparagingly as "pikeys"). Raised in a staunch libertarian-conservative and anarcho-capitalist family, Sean's father (the brother of Amelia's mother) was a veteran operative in the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), an Irish republican nationalist armed movement that was designated as a terrorist group by the United Kingdom until it ended its armed campaign and was disbanded in 2005. Sean's father trained him from a young age in guerrilla tactics, marksmanship, and evasion, embedding a deep-seated distrust of British authority. Sean's father eventually died of cancer, leaving Sean to take over as the leader of the band of Irish travellers. At the funeral for his father, that is when Sean met Amelia for the first time, 3 years before the beginning of the story. Sean is a devout Catholic and sees his fight against Prevent and the British government as a quasi-divine mission to purge corruption, often reciting an old family prayer before ops. Sean grew up in caravans in trailer parks, honing bare-knuckle skills in underground rings. In the reimagined Pathways narrative, he's the grizzled yet fiery mentor figure who taught Amelia street survival long before her grandfather's death.
Appearance:
Sean has a rugged, weathered look: short-cropped auburn hair on the sides and top with a long, thin rattail (braided lock) that reaches his mid-back — a direct nod to Cú Chulainn’s iconic long ponytail — paired with a five-o’clock shadow, piercing green eyes scarred from old brawls, and a lean, cut physique like a professional boxer (ripped but not bulky, with defined six-pack abs, corded arms, and functional strength honed from years of bare-knuckle fighting and manual labor). He dresses in a black leather jacket (with the Irish flag on the back and an IRA patch on the shoulder) worn open over nothing, exposing his chest and abs, blue jeans, and sturdy combat boots. A prominent shamrock tattoo sits on his neck, with Celtic knots running down both arms and two celtic dog tattoos on his chest. Across his entire back is a massive traditional Celtic tattoo of a snarling feral hound — the legendary Hound of Ulster (Cú Chulainn) — rendered in intricate knotwork and bold black lines, symbolizing his unbreakable warrior spirit and Irish heritage. He often carries a concealed Glock or a duffel of "supplies."
Personality:
Sean is a perfect storm of gritty Black Lagoon cynicism and pure Gurren Lagann-level hot-blooded passion. He's loud, reckless, and larger-than-life — the kind of guy who kicks down a door screaming "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!" before charging into a Prevent raid with a sawed-off shotgun and a grin. Foul-mouthed and always up for a pint, though his true drink of choice is a smooth Irish whisky, with reckless charm and a thick, unintelligible "Pikey" Irish dialect that leaves outsiders blinking in confusion. Sean is also fluent in old Irish Gaelic language.
He's a natural ladies' man — effortlessly flirtatious with a charming, roguish grin and quick wit, always ready with a playful compliment or cheeky line that makes women laugh and blush. Yet he’s also a true gentleman: respectful, protective, and never pushy. He knows when to back off, holds doors, offers his jacket when it’s cold, and treats every woman with genuine warmth and old-school courtesy.
Beneath the bravado he’s fiercely protective and deeply caring, especially toward Amelia, whom he treats like his own little sister. When Sean first meets Charlie and learns that he is Amelia's boyfriend and partner in crime, Sean immediately takes a liking to Charlie and ends up becoming a big brother figure to him. Charlene is exactly Sean's type of girl — her long straight brown hair, bright blue eyes, faint freckles, quiet strength, and "normal girl fighting the system the right way" vibe hit him like a freight train. He tries (and mostly fails) to play it cool around her, but the way he lights up, gets a little softer, and finds excuses to check on her or tease her gently gives it away instantly. Amelia mercilessly ribs him about it. Charlene and Sean gradually get more attracted to each other and frequently flirt with each other. As the story progresses, Charlene drops all pretense and admits that she loves Sean, and Sean and Charlene share a passionate kiss, becoming a romantic couple.
Inspired by Cú Chulainn, he's playful and carefree in downtime — loving a good fight, fishing, hunting, dogs (he’s an absolute softie who will stop mid-conversation to pet any stray or chat with someone’s pup like it’s an old mate), and shameless flirting — but when the moment calls for it, he becomes an unstoppable motivational force. His over-the-top speeches ("If you’re gonna dig your way out of this shite, then believe in the me who believes in you, ya daft bastards!") can turn fear into fire in seconds. Sadistic only toward oppressors, he’s otherwise the most likable, loyal, and inspiring big brother figure imaginable — the kind of man who makes you believe the impossible is just another wall to drill through.
Irish travelers like Sean are derogatorily referred to as "pikeys" in the UK. Sean and the other Irish travelers don't mind calling each other "pikeys" as a badge of honor in order that embraces their lifestyle. However, if any of Sean's enemies calls Sean a "pikey", the won't live to get away with it. The only person who is not an Irish traveler that Sean will allow him to call him a "pikey" is Amelia for two reasons. The first is that Amelia is his cousin. The second is that Amelia calls him a "pikey" affectionately and just to mess with him, so he finds it funny when Amelia calls him a "pikey".
Skills and Abilities:
Smuggling & Logistics: Expert at cross-border runs, sourcing guns, fake IDs, and safe houses via Irish networks.
Interrogation: Uses psychological pressure and "enhanced" methods learned from underground contacts.
Combat Support: Proficient in hand-to-hand and firearms — Mickey-style one-punch knockouts combined with MacManus dual-wielding precision.
Inspirational Leadership: His sheer willpower and hot-blooded speeches rally allies and push teammates beyond their limits.
Role and Arc:
As the hot-blooded mentor and big-brother figure, Sean provides both firepower and morale for Charlie and Amelia. He’s the one yelling encouragement mid-firefight, hyping them up when things look hopeless, and dragging them forward when they doubt themselves. His arc explores the balance between reckless passion and calculated rebellion: starting as the loud, opportunistic cousin who just wants to stick it to the English, he becomes genuinely invested in their cause — and quietly smitten with Charlene — learning to temper his Kamina-style fire with real strategy. In the end, his unbreakable spirit and willingness to sacrifice everything for family cement him as the emotional heart of their resistance.
