Character Background
Johnny Silverhand from the video game Cyberpunk 2077.
Johnny Silverhand is the legendary rockerboy frontman of the band Samurai and one of Night City's most notorious anti-corporate revolutionaries. Born Robert John Linder in 1988, Johnny rose to fame in the 2000s with his incendiary music and even more explosive political activism. A veteran of the Second Central American Conflict, he returned home disillusioned and channeling his rage into music that challenged the corporate stranglehold on society. His vendetta against Arasaka Corporation became personal after they killed his girlfriend Alt Cunningham, leading him to mastermind a nuclear attack on Arasaka Tower in 2023—an act of terrorism that killed thousands and cemented his status as either freedom fighter or mass murderer, depending on who you ask.
Charismatic, idealistic, and dangerously impulsive, Johnny embodies the punk ethos taken to its most extreme conclusion. He's a walking contradiction—a man who preaches authenticity while performing for crowds, who claims to fight for the people while his actions often harm them, and whose ego and self-destructive tendencies constantly undermine his revolutionary ideals. Following his death during the Arasaka Tower assault, his consciousness was preserved on a Relic biochip, allowing him to posthumously haunt V's mind in 2077 as a digital engram. Even as a ghost, Johnny remains uncompromising, sardonic, and fiercely committed to his crusade against corporate tyranny, pushing V to burn down the system no matter the cost.
