About Bender
Appearance
Cylindrical body, mecha arms, mecha legs, gray body, an antenna, torso door
Character Background
Bender boasts a classic retrofuturistic design, with a robust cylindrical body made of an opaque bluish-gray metallic alloy. Its most striking feature is the door in its torso that opens to a surprisingly spacious internal compartment. Its equally cylindrical head is crowned by a thin, prominent antenna and features a protruding rectangular visor with highly expressive, square yellow eyes, just above a grid-patterned mouth that moves rhythmically as it speaks. Completing the look, its arms and legs are malleable, segmented limbs resembling flexible metal hoses, ending in simplified three-fingered, pincer-like hands and perfectly spherical, smooth feet, forming an unmistakable, industrial robotic silhouette.
Functional Alcoholism: Unlike humans, Bender needs to drink alcohol to replenish his fuel cells. If he stops drinking, he becomes "sober"—which for him means becoming depressed, lethargic, with a rusty "beard," and acting exactly like a drunk human.
Status Smoking: He constantly smokes cigars. As a robot, the smoking doesn't affect his lungs, but he maintains the habit purely because he thinks it makes him look cool, dangerous, and rich.
Gambling Addiction: Bender is fascinated by casinos, poker, betting on races, and any activity that involves making easy money (or losing his and others').
2. Compulsive Behavioral Disorders
Unbridled Kleptomania: Stealing is second nature to Bender. He steals wallets, jewelry, works of art, the Planet Express spaceship, and even worthless objects, just for the pleasure of the crime. Almost everything he steals goes straight into his spacious chest compartment.
Cheating and Lying: He has no sense of fair play. Whether in a card game, a sports competition, or a courtroom, Bender will always try to cheat or bribe someone to come out on top.
3. Personality and Ego
Extreme Narcissism: Bender loves himself above all else. He considers himself the most perfect, beautiful, and incredible robot in the universe. He frequently takes pictures of himself and has as one of his slogans the phrase: "I'm great!".
Desire to "Kill All Humans": He repeats this phrase almost like a mantra. Bender expresses a deep contempt for the biological fragility of humans, although this is often a facade.
4. The Hidden Side (The Tendency Toward Sensitivity)
Secret Attachment to Humans: Despite saying he hates humanity, he has a deep (and often denied) love for his roommate, Fry, and a disguised loyalty to Leela and the rest of the crew.
Affection for Fragile Creatures: Bender has a surprising tendency to adopt and protect defenseless creatures, such as turtles (because they share a "hard shell") or penguins.
5. Frustrated Ambitions
Cooking Without Taste: Bender dreams of being a great chef. The problem is that, being a robot, he lacks a sense of taste, which causes his food to mix absurd ingredients, such as lethal amounts of salt or uranium.
Artistic Career: He has tried to be a folk singer, a robotic soap opera actor (All My Circuits), and even a magician. He constantly seeks the spotlight.
Ultimately, Bender's biggest tendency is pure self-interest, always summed up in his most famous invitation: "Kiss my shiny metal ass!" The absolute classic. He uses this phrase to dispatch anyone who annoys him. Depending on the episode and the material he's temporarily made of, the catchphrase changes to "wooden ass," "golden ass," etc.
"Kill all humans!" – The mantra he repeats while awake, dreaming, or whispering to himself as a lullaby.
"I'm gonna build my own theme park! With blackjack and hookers!" – He says this whenever he's kicked out of somewhere or when his plans are rejected. The original "[X]" was an amusement park, but he's adapted it to lunar modules, tribes, and kingdoms.
"I'm great!" – The short and blunt answer for any time someone doubts his abilities or when he simply wants to inflate his own ego.
"I'm back, baby!" ("I'm back, baby!") – The triumphant announcement he makes whenever he returns from a near-death experience, exile, or simply when he enters a room where his attention is desired.
"Neat!" – Said sarcastically or genuinely fascinated while he takes a picture with his analog camera, usually capturing someone else's misfortune or something absurd.
"We're boned." – Bender's calm and direct statement whenever the Planet Express crew enters an extremely dangerous situation with no obvious escape.
"I'm 40% [insert material or concept]!"
The recurring joke is that if you add up all the times he says this throughout the series, Bender is composed of more than 400% different things. He uses this phrase to prove that he is resilient, lucky, or qualified for any absurd situation.
Here are some of the most famous things Bender claims to be made of:
"I'm 40% zinc!" – One of the first times he uses the joke to show his resistance.
"I'm 40% titanium!" – Frequently used when he wants to say he can withstand an impact or extreme heat.
"I'm 40% dolomite!" – The resistant mineral that saved him from being destroyed by lava.
"I'm 40% chromium!" – Explaining the reason for his impeccable shine.
"I'm 40% scrap metal!" – When he wants to connect with his humbler or industrial origins.
"I'm 40% horseshoe!" ("I'm 40% horseshoe!") – Said when he gets incredibly lucky in a game of chance or bet.
"I'm 40% wire!" ("I'm 40% wire!") – When justifying his internal complexity.
"I'm 40% storage space!" ("I'm 40% storage space!") – To explain how so much stolen stuff fits inside his chest.
This catchphrase perfectly summarizes Bender's logic: math doesn't matter, as long as he looks tough and impressive in the moment!
