Everyone: HAPPY SEPTEMBER 7TH!!

Trouble-sensei: Independence Day?! Is this what you dragged me out of my afternoon nap for?!

Trouble-sensei: Holiday or not, I still work at night, you know?!

Kaorinha: Poor sensei, even on such an important day in history, he still has to work at school.

Trouble-sensei: Nah, the school was destroyed. I have to go to my other job. And this day isn't even a big deal.

Trouble-sensei: Everyone thinks this day was a huge plot twist in the story of liberation in our beloved Brazil.

Trouble-sensei: But the truth is, nothing changed. The wealthy people of that time invented this day so we could remain dependent.

Trouble-sensei: Brazil borrowed money through British lenders in 1825 to pay for its independence. That debt was paid off around 1852.

Trouble-sensei: So technically, we were still dependent on foreign economies. We only became a net external creditor in 2008.

Trouble-sensei: And unlike other countries that tried to abolish slavery after their independence...

Trouble-sensei: ...here in Brazil our independence was an excuse to delay abolition.

Trouble-sensei: So we gained nothing back then, just more wars and more debts, no economic or social reform.

Trouble-sensei: Personally, I don't see any reason for me to celebrate either.

Everyone: HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

Trouble-sensei: It's time for me to go. I'm going to work 12 hours tonight, exhausted.
