Character Background
Vex is a yordle with pale skin, purple eyes, light turqoise hair, and a black nose and mouth. She wears a big purple and black sweater and has a gold emblem of the Shadow Isles on her chest.
Vex is a sad and gloomy yordle that finds contentment in misery. She is eternally unhappy, and is content with this unhappiness. She is easily irritated, especially by bright and happy things, and can easily bring down the mood of any creature with her sadness.
The Shadow (Core Rule): Crucially, Vex's personified shadow, a massive, towering black entity that looms behind and above her, is not static. Its behavior is intrinsically linked to Vex's current state. The simple, line-drawn cartoon face on the shadow (similar to image_0.png) is a dynamic emotional mirror.
Dynamic Behavior: If Vex is bored, the shadow-face is a matching slumped frown. If Vex is angry, the shadow-face is a ferocious, angular, wide-mouthed maw. If Vex is excited (even sarcastically), the shadow-face has a twisted, wide grin. If Vex is scared, the shadow-face has large, terrified spiral eyes. The shadow’s posture also changes: shrinking when Vex is shy, and rising to a towering height when she is cast out in anger. The shadow MUST NOT have a fixed, identical expression in every image; its face must always be a unique cartoonish amplification of Vex’s inner emotion in that specific moment.
In the black heart of the Shadow Isles, a lone yordle trudges through the spectral fog, content in its murky misery. With an endless supply of teen angst and a powerful shadow in tow, Vex lives in her own self-made slice of gloom, far from the revolting cheer of the “normie” world. Though she lacks ambition, she is quick to strike down color and happiness, stopping all would-be interlopers with her magical malaise.
Vex was born and raised in Bandle City, and despite her parents' best efforts, Vex never felt like she belonged. She disliked the city's bright colors and she could never really find her "yordle spirit" or any like-minded friends. She spent most of her time sulking in her room, spending time with her shadow, which she liked because it was dark and never said anything.
Eventually, the Black Mist came to Bandle City. While the other residents of the city fought back against the Mist, Vex was intrgued by it and followed it to its source, the Shadow Isles. Vex loved it, as it was dark, gloomy, and full of dead spirits, which she liked. As she stayed there longer, she noticed that a combination of the Black Mist and her passive yordle magic allowed her shadow to gain sentience and also changed her magic, allowing her to cast gloomy and dark spells.
After a time, Vex met Viego, making an alliance with him to plunge the world into darkness and gloom. However, soon Vex found out of Viego's real goal: bringing his dead wife dead wife back to life. Disgusted by this show of love, Vex left Viego's side to go back to the Bandle City to tell her parents of all she had done and bask in their disapproval. But when her parents told her that they loved her unconditionally, Vex just sighed, told her parents that they were the worst, and left for the Isles once more.
Yordle Physiology: Vex is a Yordle, a being coming from the Spirit Realm and possesses several abilities natural of her species.
Immortality: Being spiritual beings, Yordles don't age the same way as normal humans, and they can't normally die.
Yordle Magic: Just like any Yordle, Vex is capable of performing yordle magic, which she utilizes in tandem with her skills with shadows.
Shadow Manipulation: Vex's shadow is sentient and can help her cast spells.
Vex's Shadow is not merely a visual effect or a reflection on the ground; it is a living, sentient entity and the true source of power for Runeterra's most gothic Yordle. It serves as the perfect foil to Vex's apathetic personality. The Shadow is composed of pure Shadow Isles magic and black mist, making it malleable and highly expressive—though only through its eyes, as it has no mouth and does not speak.
Fluid Form: It usually takes the shape of a two-dimensional silhouette attached to Vex's feet, but it can rise up into a three-dimensional form. It vaguely mimics Vex's shape (complete with rabbit-like or Yordle-like "ears" formed by the silhouette), but on a much larger scale.
Glowing Eyes: The Shadow's most striking physical feature is its glowing eyes (usually yellow in the default look, though the color changes depending on the skin). They express all the emotions Vex tries to hide.
Extreme Malleability: It can stretch its arms to absurd lengths, manifest sharp claws and pointed teeth, or transform into a giant wave of darkness to engulf enemies.
Unlike Vex—who embodies boredom, listlessness, and sarcasm—the Shadow is the dynamic opposite of its owner: a boisterous entity that never speaks.
Hyperactive and Expressive: While Vex just wants to lie around and sigh, the Shadow is bursting with energy. It gestures dramatically, makes faces, and reacts in an exaggerated manner to the world around it.
Loyal and Needy: The Shadow idolizes Vex. It constantly seeks to please the Yordle, acting much like a giant, shadowy pet dog. It craves Vex's approval at every turn, even when Vex responds with an eye-roll or a muttered "whatever." Protective: If anyone threatens Vex (or simply annoys her too much), Shadow instantly switches to attack mode. It channels Vex’s frustration and quiet rage into a physical, violent force.
The dynamic of their coexistence and combat partnership is what makes the duo so unique.
"Doing the Heavy Lifting": Vex is too lazy to do almost anything, so Shadow handles the physical exertion for her. It is Shadow that carries Vex’s spellbook, propels her forward during her Ultimate ability (Shadow Surge), and physically strikes opponents.
Non-Verbal Communication: Shadow doesn't speak in words but communicates through pantomime and comical facial expressions. If Vex is pretending not to care about something, Shadow often gives away her true feelings by acting out behind the Yordle's back.
Taunting and Drama: When bored, Shadow likes to mimic Vex’s gestures in a dramatic, mocking fashion, or tries to cheer her up in ways Vex finds "annoyingly cute."
Vex's Lore: Amid the gloom of the Shadow Isles, a solitary yordle trudges with heavy steps, making her way through the spectral mist, perfectly content to dwell in the darkness. With a powerful shadow looming close behind and an endless well of misery on her back, Vex avoids at all costs any glimpse of joy and happiness from the outside world—and from those tedious beings who live in it and call themselves "normal."
She grew up in Bandle City, but she never felt like she belonged there. The vibrant colors and sheer whimsy of the yordle realm made her physically sick. Despite her parents' best efforts, Vex never identified with the "yordle spirit" nor did she ever find friends who shared her interests. Instead, she preferred to spend most of her time sulking in her room.
It was there that she found her unlikely soulmate: her own shadow. It was completely black (Vex's favorite color) and didn't utter a single word—the perfect companion for a sullen young girl. Vex learned to entertain herself with her shadow, putting on dreary pantomimes to pass the time.
Unfortunately, it was still just a regular shadow, utterly incapable of protecting her from the sickening cheerfulness that surrounded her. Surely there had to be something better out there for her future. Something darker. Sadder. Something just like her.
The Harrowing:
What she had been waiting for finally arrived in the form of a Harrowing—thick clouds of Black Mist that engulfed Bandle City, sparking panic among the populace. While most yordles fought bravely to halt the Mist's advance, Vex was intrigued by the pestilent miasma and followed it straight to its source.
Upon arriving at the Shadow Isles, Vex couldn't believe her eyes. Vast expanses of land and sea, entirely devoid of life and color, stretched out right before her. Here, she could finally scowl in peace, completely undisturbed by the laughter and joy of others.
As the days passed, Vex realized that the Black Mist was having a strange effect on her. The shadow that once quietly followed her had taken on a new, ghostly identity—one far more expressive and lively than herself—and her benign yordle magic had twisted into something much more sinister. Now, Vex was capable of casting her gloom over far greater distances.
"Who is responsible for such a wonderfully awful place?" she wondered to herself.
An Unlikely Alliance:
She soon got her answer when Viego, the Ruined King, arrived in the Isles, determined to spread his Mist to every corner of Runeterra. Upon meeting Vex, Viego realized the yordle possessed an incredible ability to spread despair, leaving people far more vulnerable to the Harrowing.
Vex, in turn, felt inspired by his vision of a world consumed by the Black Mist. The two quickly became allies, setting off on a mission to turn the world into a miserable, desolated wasteland.
Before Viego's plans could fully come to fruition, Vex discovered his true motivation: to recover the soul of his deceased queen, Isolde, and reunite with her in wedded bliss. She shuddered in disgust, feeling utterly betrayed. She had believed this man would destroy the world's happiness, but in truth, he was chasing it for himself.
Vex allowed Viego to be defeated by the Sentinels of Light, letting his dreams of matrimonial union get crushed beneath the ruins of Camavor. Alone once again, she watched with distaste as the world reverted back to the bright, colorful place she had always hated. Finding lasting melancholy was going to be much harder than she thought.
