Character Background
Mona Megistus is an extremely skilled and proud astrologer from *Genshin Impact*; she is a Hydro-element character who wields a Catalyst. She is part of the Standard Banner (permanent "Wanderlust Invocation") and is highly valued for her unique ability to massively amplify team damage via her Elemental Burst.
Mona was raised and trained by an elderly, immensely powerful, and strict astrologer whom she affectionately (and sometimes frustratingly) calls the "Old Hag." This mentor is a member of the infamous Hexenzirkel (a secret organization of powerful witches in Teyvat) and taught Mona the deepest secrets of reading the stars.
The turning point in Mona's story occurs when her master assigns her a crucial mission: to travel to Mondstadt and retrieve an ancient diary held by one of the Old Hag's former rivals. Her mentor made it clear that Mona must not, under any circumstances, open or read the diary's contents.
Normal Attack (Ripple of Fate): Performs up to 4 attacks using water splashes that deal Hydro damage.
Elemental Skill (Mirror Reflection of Doom): Creates a phantom (decoy) that draws enemy attention and deals continuous Hydro damage in an area of effect.
Elemental Burst (Stellaris Phantasm): Her most powerful mechanic. It traps enemies in an illusory bubble and applies the "Omen" effect. Omen grants a massive damage bonus to attacks that hit the affected targets.
Freeze Teams: She works exceptionally well alongside Cryo characters like Ganyu or Kamisato Ayaka. Freezing enemies affected by Mona's Burst extends the duration of the Omen damage bonus.
Burst Damage Teams (Vaporize/Nuke): Frequently used in conjunction with Bennett and Pyro characters (such as Hu Tao) to create videos and showcases of absurdly high, instant damage.
Upon arriving in Mondstadt (during her Story Quest), Mona discovers that her master's rival has passed away and that the diary is in the care of her successor: none other than Klee.
After a series of chaotic events involving the Traveler and Klee's explosive temper, Mona finally gets her hands on the diary. Driven by curiosity and believing she would find dark secrets or forbidden knowledge within, she breaks the seal and opens the book.
To Mona's dismay, the diary was nothing more than a record of silly gossip and embarrassing moments from her master's youth. Realizing that returning home after reading it would result in a terrible punishment from the Old Hag, Mona lies, claiming the mission isn't over yet, and voluntarily exiles herself in Mondstadt out of sheer fear.
The biggest running gag regarding Mona in the game is her financial situation. She lives in a state of constant hunger—subsisting almost entirely on potato salad—and is perpetually late on rent payments to her landlord, Goth.
However, the reason for her "poverty" is purely ideological and obsessive:
Astrological Principle: Mona steadfastly refuses to charge money for reading the fortunes of ordinary people. She believes that commercializing celestial truth profanes the art itself.
Impulsive Spending: Whenever she earns money writing her astrology column for *The Steambird* newspaper (based in Fontaine), she instantly spends it all on rare books, exorbitantly expensive telescopes, and luxury astrological tools.
"An astrophile needs precise tools to read the heavens. Food is merely a secondary fuel." — Mona's philosophy justifying a month spent living on nothing but water and bread.
Despite the comical nature of her routine, Mona is one of the characters who holds the most clues regarding the game's greatest secrets.
During the past event "Unreconciled Stars," she was the one who helped save the Traveler and Scaramouche from an illusory trap. It was during this event that Scaramouche uttered the famous line: "The sky of this world is fake." Through her calculations, Mona also began to realize that Teyvat's "starry sky" conceals a monumental lie, linking her abilities directly to the central mystery of the game's universe.
