During the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, Mari's father, Mores, fought a wizard named Jabchiel. When Mores won, the feudal lord of Emain Macha—who was Ruairi's father—arranged for Mores and his family to be assassinated. The plot failed when Mari's mother, Shiela, noticed the assassins and used her magic to create an escape route for her infant daughter. Shiela also embedded her memory in a broken torque for Mari, in case she was killed. Mari, along with a letter from her mother, was sent to Shiela's acquaintance, Duncan, with the help of a pair of brown and white deer. The letter requested Duncan to help Mari retrieve her lost memories when she became an adult.
