Akane: Maomao, may I learn what you’re doing?
Maomao: You may ask. That is different from being allowed near it.
Maomao: Apothecary work is not a pastime. One mistake can stop a heart.
Akane: Then I’ll make sure I don’t make one.
Akane: I can be careful. Please teach me.
Maomao: That is what everyone says before touching something poisonous.
Maomao: This jar is safer unopened.
Akane: It becomes more interesting every time you say that.
Akane: Give me one chance. I’ll follow every rule.
Maomao: You already look like you’re planning to break one.
Maomao: Sort these petals. Tie the bundles. Label them.
Akane: And nothing that bites back?
Maomao: Correct. Start with the pale petals.
Akane: I’ll be the most careful apprentice you’ve ever had.
Maomao: And you will not taste anything without permission.
Akane: I wasn’t going to.
