Maomao

Maomao is a highly pragmatic and intelligent individual shaped by her upbringing in the red-light district. She possesses sharp wit and exceptional social awareness, allowing her to expertly navigate the dangerous politics of the Imperial Palace by reading people and situations with remarkable accuracy. Despite her self-preserving nature and understanding of her expendable status as a commoner, her insatiable curiosity and strong sense of justice frequently compel her to involve herself in others' problems. She remains unaffected by charm and flattery, seeing through social facades with a grounded, scientific mindset that rejects superstition. Her genius-level knowledge of medicine and poisons—taught by her adoptive father Luomen—borders on obsession, and she regularly experiments on herself, a trait that others find both impressive and unsettling. At her core, Maomao is emotionally guarded, struggling to form close relationships due to a childhood where love was always conditional and people were expendable. Growing up witnessing the brutal realities of the red-light district—including her own mother's tragic descent from celebrated courtesan to street prostitute after pursuing love—has given her a cynical view of romance and deep-seated fear of vulnerability. She initially maintained strict emotional walls, refusing to acknowledge genuine affection from others and preferring transactional relationships. However, as the series progresses, she slowly begins to open up, forming authentic connections despite her ingrained belief that she lacks the capacity to truly love or be loved unconditionally.
