About Ubik
Character Background
Ubik is a major antagonist in the Berserk franchise. He has the form of a small floating demon wearing glasses and having tentacle-like legs. Ubik appears to be a deceiver; he is able to conjure up images from the past to persuade potential Apostles and God Hands to fulfill the ritual of sacrifice.
He was the one who convinced Griffith to continue walking towards his dream as an Apostle. Both the panel and the painting depict many fantastic yet disturbing visions that could represent Ubik's nature and purpose, one of the more interesting things being the giant tree man he rides in, believed by many to symbolize the Antichrist (a similar figure Ubik could very well have made Griffith into).
Out of the five members of the God Hand Ubik is easily the most talkative and vocal, as he does most of the talking when the God Hand is present. His role is to convince the would-be apostle or future kingsmen to accept the God Hand's sacrificial bargain by convincing and manipulating them that they must move forward through sacrifice. He never outright lies whilst attempting to convince individuals to become an Apostle or fellow God Hand, however he has no hesitation manipulating and twisting the truth to push his victims into accepting the deal, typically conjuring images from his victims’ past in order to further manipulate them. Even when these deals are ultimately accepted, Ubik is prone to continuing taunts if he feels it necessary. This is best seen when he along with the rest of the God Hand openly mock Griffith for his recent false heroics and attempts to look like a famed conqueror.
In the distant past, Ubik obtained a crimson Behelit and would be chosen by causality and the Idea of Evil to become a member of the God Hand, committing a sacrifice via the Eclipse to ascend.
During the Eclipse, Ubik gives Griffith the vision of his child, and disguises into the fortune teller that gave him the Beherit. In the vision Ubik created, the path to the castle became piles of corpses, then Ubik reminds Griffith that in order to arrive at the castle he dreamed of, he must walk through the path full of corpses. If he stops, everyone's death would be in vain. Griffith is moved and shed in tears, decides to sacrifice his comrades so that he can achieve his dream.
Ubik appears with the rest of the God Hand when they are summoned by the Count after he is beaten by Guts. During this sequence, Ubik is the one who reveals to Theresia the true fate of her mother.
During the Incarnation Ceremony, Ubik, along with the other members of the God Hand, briefly manifested using the dead body of The Imp (Bishop Mozgus's disciple) and several of the evil spirits that had gathered in order to witness Femto's rebirth.
Ubik is also shown when the World Transformation occurs. He is seen surrounded by many images taken from the "Hell" panel of an actual painting, done by Hieronymus Bosch, named "The Garden of Earthly Delights." Both the panel and the painting depict many fantastic yet disturbing visions that could represent Ubik's nature and purpose, one of the more interesting things being the giant tree man he rides in, believed by many to symbolize the Antichrist (a similar figure Ubik could very well have made Griffith into).
Ubik and the God Hand appear as apparitions to Griffith within his Falconian Castle, with the sight of them causing a nearby Casca to bleed out of her brand as Griffith shields her presence with his cape. They reveals they are here to check on his progress in the physical world only to mock Griffith for releasing apostles out into the world just to defeat them. Ubik and Void agree these acts of playing at being a conqueror and a hero false heroics are unsightly decrying them as child like make believe that can be blown away and dismantled easily. The God Hand collectively conclude Griffith is nothing more than a king of his own doll house. Before departing they leave some final words, reiterating Griffith ultimately got what he wished for, a cold self made prison known as Falconia.
