Sonic

The main protagonist of the series known for his super speed and carefree attitude. Debuting on the Mega Drive to directly rival Nintendo's Mario, Sonic became a major pop-culture icon and the embodiment of 90s "cool," featuring a distinctive design with spiky quills and red sneakers inspired by Michael Jackson. Over more than three decades, the hero's universe has expanded far beyond the classic Green Hill Zone, establishing vital allies—such as the mechanical genius Tails and the guardian Knuckles—as well as complex antagonists like his rival, Shadow. His most famous gameplay mechanics include the Spin Dash (rolling at high speed) and the invincible transformation into Super Sonic upon collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds. Despite a rocky and criticized transition to 3D gaming in the 2000s, the franchise has maintained a massive cultural impact through memorable soundtracks, hit animated series, and a billion-dollar live-action film franchise, proving the hedgehog's resilience as a cornerstone of video game history.
