Slan is one of the five members of the God Hand, the enigmatic demonic beings who influence the world of Berserk through causality. Alongside Void, Ubik, Conrad, and Femto, she occupies a position of extraordinary supernatural power. The only female member of the group, she is distinguished by her seductive appearance, sadistic personality, and fascination with humanity’s darkest desires. Slan takes particular interest in Guts, whose suffering, rage, and defiance captivate her. Rather than simply wishing to destroy him, she wants to see him give in to his hatred and become an apostle. Appearance Slan appears as a beautiful, pale-skinned woman with enormous black, bat-like wings and long, flowing, tendril-like hair. Her form evokes a succubus or fallen angel. Her alluring appearance contrasts with her cruelty and the grotesque forms in which she can manifest. As a member of the God Hand, Slan’s existence is not limited to an ordinary physical body. She can appear in the astral realm and, under certain conditions, form a temporary vessel in the physical world. Personality Slan is hedonistic, sadistic, sensual, and manipulative. She delights in extremes of emotion, especially the mingling of love, hatred, pleasure, fear, and pain. Violence and despair are not merely tools to her; she finds them beautiful and exciting. She is also a masochist. Injury can give her pleasure rather than deter her, making her responses to violence profoundly unsettling. Her manner is often playful, even when she witnesses atrocities or inflicts terrible suffering. Slan is particularly intrigued by people who struggle against overwhelming circumstances. Guts fascinates her because he continues fighting despite wounds and losses that would break most people. She sees the darkness within him and wants him to embrace it, disregarding the relationships that keep him connected to his humanity. Origins Slan’s life before joining the God Hand has not been revealed. The manga has not established her original identity, the circumstances of her transformation, or whom she might have sacrificed. The God Hand’s members are associated with the Crimson Beherit and the sacrificial ceremony known as the Eclipse. Their power and existence are intimately connected with the laws of causality, but many details of their origins remain mysterious. Role in the Story The Black Swordsman Arc: Slan appears when the Count summons the God Hand with his Beherit. She observes Guts’ hostility toward Femto and expresses interest in the possibility of Guts becoming an apostle. The Count is offered a chance to make another sacrifice, but refuses to surrender his daughter, Theresia, and is dragged into the Abyss. The Eclipse: Slan is present when Griffith sacrifices the Band of the Falcon and is reborn as Femto. She watches the massacre with delight and takes a particular interest in Guts’ agony. Her reaction to Femto’s assault on Casca underscores her complete lack of human compassion. The Skull Knight subsequently intervenes and escapes with Guts and Casca. The Conviction Arc: A pagan cult associated with the Goddess of Flame reflects Slan’s influence through rituals involving intoxication, sexual excess, and violence. Slan also appears with the God Hand during the extraordinary events surrounding Griffith’s return to the physical world. The Qliphoth: Slan has her most direct confrontation with Guts in a dark region of the astral world. She assembles a temporary body from the entrails of slaughtered trolls, attacks Guts, and inflicts a wound that reaches beyond ordinary physical injury. She tempts him to use the Beherit he carries and sacrifice those close to him. The Skull Knight intervenes, and Guts strikes her manifested body with the Dragon Slayer. Slan takes pleasure in the attack before her vessel breaks apart. Its destruction is not shown to destroy her true existence. Powers and Abilities Astral existence: Slan exists on a supernatural plane and cannot be understood as an ordinary flesh-and-blood opponent. Manifestation: She can appear in different forms, including the temporary body she constructs from troll entrails in the Qliphoth. She admires his tenacity and is excited by his rage, suffering, and potential to become something monstrous. He rejects her temptation and remains her enemy. Femto / Griffith: Slan witnesses Griffith’s rebirth and takes pleasure in the cruelty of the Eclipse. Both belong to the God Hand, but their individual aims and personalities differ. Skull Knight: An enemy of the God Hand who disrupts Slan’s encounter with Guts in the Qliphoth. His intervention prevents her from continuing the confrontation on her terms. Void, Ubik, and Conrad: Her fellow God Hand members. They share an overarching supernatural role, but the manga reveals little about their private relationships or any hierarchy of individual strength. Character Significance Slan personifies desire stripped of empathy or restraint. Where Guts fights to preserve his humanity in the face of trauma and hatred, she encourages him to surrender to those impulses.
