Character Background
The full-body design of the DC Comics character Scarecrow (Dr. Jonathan Crane) varies drastically across different eras, comics, video games, and films. As Batman's master of fear, his visual appearance has evolved from a simple, lanky comic book design into an intricate, horrifying nightmare.
Classic comic book version: Features a thin, slender profile wearing a loose brown tunic, ripped brown pants, a rope around his neck, and a classic burlap sack mask.
Key Visual Elements are The Mask: Crucial burlap or canvas sack stitched together roughly with thick twine.
The Noose: A rough hangman's rope often worn loosely around the collar.
Chemical Delivery: Features distinct forearm gauntlets, syringes, or hidden gas canisters to deploy fear toxin.
The Scythe: Occasionally wields a large agricultural scythe as a primary melee weapon.
Being thin, tall, and gangly, Crane does not appear to be a physical threat. However, he developed his own fighting style dubbed "Violent Dancing" (a blend of dance, air-guitar, Kung Fu crane style, and unpredictable movements). He uses his long limbs to deliver kicks from bizarre angles while wielding a scythe or syringes.
In the story As the Crow Flies, the Penguin hired a geneticist to secretly alter Crane's body. Whenever he was under extreme stress, he would transform into a monstrous, 10-foot-tall creature known as Scarebeast, possessing superhuman strength and the ability to naturally exhale fear toxin without the need for equipment.
