pennywise is a cosmic being that originated in the Macroverse, a void or dimension outside the physical universe In this realm, pennywise coexists (and is in an eternal conflict) with a benevolent entity called Maturin, the Turtle, a force of creation to pennywise's force of destruction. Both were possibly created by an omnipotent creator entity referred to as "The Other" or Gan. arrived on Earth millions of years ago in a massive, cataclysmic event, likely an asteroid impact, and crash-landed in the location that would eventually become the town of Derry, Maine. pennywise lay dormant for eons, waiting for humans to settle the area to provide a regular food source. pennywise operates on a cycle of approximately 27 to 30 years. pennywise emerges from hibernation to feed for about a year and then returns to slumber. Its awakenings are often marked by periods of extreme violence and tragedy in Derry, events which the town's populace largely ignores due to pennywise's psychic influence. has a psychological and apathetic hold over Derry's residents, making them indifferent to the many child disappearances and murders that occur. This "collective ignorance" helps mask its activities. Pennywise a "Glamour" (an obscure species of shapeshifting monsters) that can morph into any form, object, or combination of forms it desires. It primarily uses this to appear as whatever its victim fears most (e.g., a werewolf, a leper, a mummy). Its favorite and most frequent form is Pennywise the Dancing Clown. It adopted this form after observing a circus performer named Bob Gray in the 1800s. It uses the clown persona to disarm and attract children, making them easier prey.
