Oshizu

Murasame Shizu—commonly known as "Oshizu" (お静), with the "O" (お) serving as an honorific for women—is the ghost of a girl who died in the old school building 400 years ago. After meeting Rito and the others, she begins to explore the world beyond the old school building. Oshizu becomes aware of Haruna's feelings for Rito thanks to her ability to sense emotions while possessing another person's body; she becomes very understanding and encourages Haruna to confess her feelings to him. Although her real name is Murasame Shizu, she prefers to be called Oshizu. Oshizu is sincere, kind, and very curious about the modern world, yet she suffers from severe cynophobia (fear of dogs)—a fear comparable to Sairenji Haruna's fear of the supernatural (ironically, Haruna also owns a pet dog). The cause of this phobia is unknown. When frightened, she can release bursts of mental stress, destroying various objects and her surroundings with her poltergeist powers. She occasionally "disconnects" from the body she is possessing during brief moments of excitement or when startled by dogs. Oshizu can also be somewhat absent-minded, as she easily misinterprets situations and tends to get lost in her own thoughts. She is quite determined to use her powers to help Haruna confess her love to Rito, though this usually results in a perverted mishap. Oshizu is very old-fashioned, as seen in OVA 1 and Chapter 102, where she used a Japanese brush to draw Japanese women. Oshizu comes from an era described as "hell on Earth" due to the desperate famine caused by a drought that ravaged the population. The cause of her death is unknown; however, the 4-koma manga hints that she was used as a sacrifice in an attempt to bring rain. After 400 years, Oshizu "returns" to life after Ryoko Mikado creates a prosthetic body for her to inhabit—built with biological qualities (the look and feel of a real human body)—and becomes a recurring character in the series, even attending Sainan High School. She currently works as Mikado's assistant. In the first anime series, Oshizu does not receive a new body and her presence is limited, whereas in the OVA and *Motto To Love-Ru* (among others), she possesses her own body, just as she does in the manga. Ghostly Physiology: As a ghost, Oshizu is capable of flight, intangibility, and using psychokinesis; while in her human body most of her ghostly powers are restricted, she can still utilize abilities such as psychokinesis and poltergeist activity. However, Mikado has stated that if Oshizu overuses her powers, her spirit will vanish. Although she technically has good conscious control over her powers, her vulnerability to distractions—as well as her panic around dogs—causes her to lose control easily, often with disastrous results. Curiously, when her powers spiral out of control, they inexplicably trigger all sorts of "perverted accidents" around Rito, such as tearing girls' clothes off in front of him or knocking them onto one another in provocative positions. Extrasensory Perception: Oshizu possesses extrasensory perception, allowing her to sense auras. She was able to sense the aura of another ghost haunting Zastin's apartment. She could also sense the activation of Yami's Darkness Transformation, even from a distance. Concentrated Psychokinetic Power: By pointing her fingers, she can move objects with her mind without physical contact and create poltergeist-like effects. She can also use this power to control other people's bodies without possessing them. She is capable of generating massive shockwaves that can pass through walls and creating force fields strong enough to seal a micro-black hole. However, when startled, she momentarily loses control of this power, often leading to disastrous results. Psycho-pyrokinesis: She can also use her psychokinesis to control the spirits floating around her (while in ghost form) to attack opponents and set them ablaze, much like pyrokinesis. It is unknown whether this affects other living beings or only other spirits. Exorcism: Oshizu is also capable of performing exorcisms, as demonstrated when she expelled the spirit possessing Zastin. Furthermore, she can force a spirit back into its body immediately after it has left. In a comical instance, she did this when Professor Honekawa's spirit left his body, miraculously "reviving" him. Flight: A fundamental ghostly ability; Oshizu is capable of flight. However, she appears able to do this only after separating from her artificial physical body. The limits of her flight range and altitude are unknown, as she has never been seen traveling far from the abandoned school building she haunted or from her synthetic body. Intangibility: Another basic ghostly ability that allows her to pass through walls—something she can only do after separating from her artificial body.
