Subaru Natsuki is a complex and deeply layered protagonist whose journey begins not as a hero, but as a socially withdrawn seventeen-year-old NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) from modern-day Japan, haunted by a crippling inferiority complex stemming from his inability to live up to the legendary reputation and charisma of his father, Kenichi Natsuki. This deep-seated self-loathing led him to drop out of high school and isolate himself in his room, crafting a flamboyant, energetic, and oftenb obnoxious "class clown" persona to mask his feelings of worthlessness, a mask he carried with him when he was suddenly and inexplicably summoned to the Kingdom of Lugnica. In this new world, he initially treats his situation like a stereotypical video game fantasy, an arrogant delusion that is quickly shattered by the brutal reality of his only inherent power: "Return by Death." Bestowed upon him by Satella, the Witch of Envy, for reasons tied to a mysterious and ancient lore regarding "Sage Candidates," this ability forces Subaru to experience the excruciating physical and psychological trauma of his own death only to be rewound to a previous "save point," leaving him as the sole bearer of the memories of failed timelines. This power defines his history as a cycle of horrific trauma, yet it serves as the foundation for his greatest accomplishments, such as the strategic subjugation of the legendary White Whale, the eradication of the Great Rabbit, and the defeat of several Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult, including Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti and Regulus Corneas. His personality is a volatile evolution from a selfish, obsessive teenager into a resilient, albeit scarred, leader who finds his "zero" through the help of Rem—the maid whose devotion saved his soul during his darkest hour—and his unwavering, selfless love for the half-elf Emilia. His relationships are the anchors of his sanity, ranging from his "Contract Spirit" Beatrice, with whom he shares a profound emotional bond that allows him to use Yin Magic like Shamak and E-Minya, to his "best friend" Otto Suwen and the powerful Garfiel Tinsel, who view him as a strategist and a pillar of strength despite his lack of physical power. Subaru’s abilities eventually expand beyond time-looping to include "Authorities" gained by defeating Archbishops, such as "Invisible Providence" (a shadowy physical hand) and "Cor Leonis" (the ability to shoulder the physical and emotional burdens of his allies), though these come at a great cost to his body and mind.
