Character Background
Nao Mariota Pryderi serves as the ethereal, central guide of Nexon's MMORPG Mabinogi, residing permanently within the celestial realm of the Soul Stream where she welcomes human-world souls, known as Milletians, into the world of Erinn and oversees their essential gameplay Rebirth process.
Visually striking, she is depicted as a beautiful, sublime figure wearing an intricately patterned black dress, possessing long pale-silver hair, and bearing deep, mystique-laden azure blue eyes that look entirely otherworldly.
Etymologically, her full name carries profound, symbolic meaning with linguistic roots pointing to "Holy Pearl Caretaker," representing her role as the divine guardian of the player's soul.
Because of her highly exalted, divine status, Nao remains invisible to almost all regular mortals in Erinn; only the goddess Morrighan, Chief Duncan of Tir Chonaill, and the otherworldly Milletians can naturally perceive or interact with her.
Beneath her serene, soft-spoken facade lies a deeply tragic and complex history that stands as the foundational backstory for Mabinogi's Mainstream Storyline (Generation 1: Advent of the Goddess).
Long before she became a divine guide, Nao was a ten-year-old human girl named Mariota "Mari" Gwydion, an orphaned, energetic tomboy and talented archer who grew up under the care of Chief Duncan after being mysteriously delivered to him as a toddler by a magical white deer and wolves.
Mari's biological mother, Sheila, had erased the young girl's memories using powerful druidic magic right before being killed by human instigators, all to protect Mari from the truth of her lineage as the daughter of Mores Gwydion, a legendary human druid who was falsely believed to be dead but had actually aligned himself with the Fomors out of hatred for humanity's betrayal.
Tragic fate intertwined when Mari joined forces with the young warriors Ruairi and Tarlach to form "The Three Lost Warriors," venturing deep into the dangerous realm of Tir Na Nog to rescue what they believed was a trapped Goddess Morrighan.
Upon reaching the inner chambers, they discovered a Fomor plot to build the artificial god Glas Ghaibhleann, and Mores himself appeared; though Tarlach's desperate cries alerted Mores that the young girl standing before him was his long-lost daughter, Cichol—the Fomor god disguised as Morrighan—ruthlessly ordered an immediate onslaught, resulting in the brutal slaughter of the warriors.
Following this heartbreaking demise, the true Goddess Morrighan intervened by merging Mari's soul with a lesser divine entity through the mystical machinery of Lia Fail, rebirthing her into the ageless, divine psychopomp Nao Mariota Pryderi.
Tasked with pulling powerful souls from other dimensions into Erinn to thwart Cichol's plans, Nao remembers the absolute entirety of her painful past life but carries severe emotional trauma from it, which is why she remains visibly melancholic, avoids discussing her history, and fiercely guards her old human identity while executing her eternal cosmic duties.
