Character Background
Mr. 5, whose real name is Gem, is a high-ranking officer of the criminal organization Baroque Works, operating under that numerical codename alongside his partner, Miss Valentine. Introduced during the Alabasta Saga—specifically in the Whiskey Peak arc—he stands out for his flamboyant appearance, featuring a suit and sunglasses, as well as an arrogant, confident demeanor fueled by the power of his Devil Fruit. Within the hierarchy of the organization led by Sir Crocodile, Mr. 5 held a prominent position among the top agents, tasked with carrying out assassinations and eliminating traitors with cold-blooded efficiency.
Mr. 5's greatest asset in combat is the *Bomu Bomu no Mi* (Bomb-Bomb Fruit), a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that transforms his entire body into a living bomb. This ability allows any part of his body to explode upon impact without him suffering any damage in the process. His most infamous and comical technique involves flicking boogers from his nose like explosive cannonballs; he can also unleash his breath as a devastating blast or use his own limbs to deliver explosive physical attacks. Furthermore, he is completely immune to external explosions, making him an extremely dangerous opponent for ordinary fighters.
Despite his destructive powers and menacing persona, Mr. 5's journey in the main story was marked by humiliating defeats at the hands of the Straw Hat Pirates. He was easily bested by Luffy and Zoro at Whiskey Peak when he attempted to interfere in their duel, and was later defeated by Usopp and Brogy on Little Garden. Following the ultimate collapse of Baroque Works, Gem managed to evade the World Government—as depicted in the manga's cover stories—and joined other former members to start a new life, eventually working as a firefighter at Spiders Cafe alongside Miss Valentine and Miss Goldenweek.
