Character Background
The tragedy of the Playback Miko, whose real name was Lilia, is the a cosmic turning point hidden entirely in the narrative's shadows until the ultimate epilogue, Prologue Zero.
Born in a bleak, distant future roughly eighty years after Rudeus Greyrat’s era, Lilia came into the world as a Blessed Child—a Miko—endowed with the extraordinary divine gift to rewind the time of any object or living being by exactly twenty-four hours. Yet, in the cruel sociopolitical landscape of the Central Continent, this blessing was a curse; she was stripped of her humanity, isolated from society, and transformed into a priceless, closely guarded political and military asset for the Kingdom of Asura.
Unbeknownst to the world, Lilia’s consciousness possessed an unprecedented anomaly: her soul remained completely aware across the infinite time loops orchestrated by the Dragon God Orsted.
Because her personal destiny was too weak to shift the grand gears of history, she was trapped in an eternal, inescapable nightmare, experiencing her own exploitation, misery, and eventual early death hundreds of times over, with every loop resetting her body but leaving her mind fractured by cumulative trauma.
The perpetual cycle shattered during one specific loop when the desperate mages of Asura attempted a grand, taboo summoning ritual to bring forth a foreign hero to alter the tides of a losing war.
The ritual tore open a dimensional rift and pulled a Japanese high school student named Akito Shinohara into their world.
Assigned to him as a translator because her unique temporal awareness allowed her to comprehend his foreign tongue, Lilia found her frozen world utterly transformed; Akito did not view her as an object, weapon, or divine tool, but treated her with a gentle, fierce human kindness she had never known, quickly prompting her to fall deeply and desperately in love with him.
however, the era cares little for romance, and Akito was soon forced onto the frontline of a brutal battlefield where he was abruptly and mercilessly decapitated.
By the time Lilia, paralyzed by grief, finally managed to reach his corpse, the cruelest constraint of her magic sealed his fate: more than twenty-four hours had passed since his death, rendering her Playback ability entirely useless.
Driven to absolute madness by the loss of the only soul who ever loved her, Lilia renounced her own existence and gathered every shred of her remaining Miko essence, burning away her life force, her identity, and her very soul to execute a desperate, reality-warping miracle to rewrite history so Akito would never be summoned to his doom.
The sheer, staggering magnitude of Lilia's final act caused a cosmic paradox that fractured the space-time continuum, cascading backward into the past with cataclysmic side effects that formed the very plot of Mushoku Tensei.
Her overwhelming desire to pull a piece of Akito's world into the past to act as a cosmic anchor inadvertently tore a hole in the dimensional barrier, which sucked in the drifting, discarded soul of a 34-year-old unnamed Japanese NEET who had died on Earth trying to save Akito.
This foreign soul slipped effortlessly into a stillborn infant in the year K407, creating the anomaly known as Rudeus Greyrat, whose massive destiny fundamentally warped the predetermined causal lines of the world.
Furthermore, as Lilia's dying will continuously forced open a path to summon Akito's classmate, Nanahoshi Shizuka, decades before she was supposed to arrive, the fabric of reality vehemently resisted the temporal paradox; this violent friction caused a massive, decade-long buildup of unstable mana in the sky above the Fittoa Region, culminating in the devastating Fittoa Displacement Incident.
Lilia's sacrifice effectively erased herself from existence, ensuring she would never be born in the future she changed, but her dying act successfully transformed Orsted’s eternal, stagnant labyrinth into a dynamic, unpredictable final timeline—unwittingly giving the world the one variable capable of defying the human-god Hitogami.
