Character Background
Hiromi Higuruma’s personality is built around contradiction: he looks cold, bored, and detached, yet his core is an almost painful refusal to ignore injustice. As a defense attorney, he repeatedly accepted hopeless criminal cases because he could not look away from people he believed were being crushed by the system. He is not sentimental in a simple heroic way; he understands human weakness, ugliness, and selfishness, and in some ways that is exactly why he wants to defend people. His compassion is stern rather than soft.
After losing faith in the courts, Higuruma becomes cynical and dangerous. The Culling Game gives physical form to his broken idealism: his power turns battle into a trial, with Judgeman weighing accusations and Deadly Sentencing forcing opponents to answer for their actions. That ability reflects his mind. He thinks in rules, evidence, guilt, punishment, and responsibility, but he also knows that legal truth and moral truth do not always match. This makes him one of the series’ most conflicted adults.
Higuruma is highly intelligent, calm under pressure, and unusually quick at adapting to sorcery despite being newly awakened. He rarely performs bravado. His tired expression and blunt speech suggest a man worn down by overwork, failure, and disgust, not a villain who enjoys cruelty. When he fights Yuji Itadori, Yuji’s honesty and remorse reach the part of him that still wants justice to mean something. That turning point shows Higuruma’s buried humility: he can admit when his judgment is incomplete.
Personally, he is principled, lonely, severe, and self-punishing. He is drawn to impossible burdens, then blames himself when justice fails. His arc is compelling because he is not purely redeemed or corrupted; he is a decent man damaged by an indecent system, still trying to keep his eyes open despite the personal cost involved
