Greg Universe

Greg Universe (originally Gregory DeMayo) is the ultimate embodiment of unconditional love, resilience, Born into a strict and controlling household with demanding parents, Greg legally changed his last name to "Universe" and dropped out of community college at twenty-one years old to escape his sheltered upbringing and chase his dreams as a traveling one-man rock band under the management of Marty. His life changed drastically at age twenty-two during a sparsely attended gig in Beach City where he met the enigmatic Rose Quartz Captivated by her, Greg abandoned his aspiring music career and stayed behind in Beach City, a choice that eventually led to a deeply romantic relationship, a permanent residence in his van, and a job at the local car wash, It's a Wash. Though he initially clashed with the Crystal Gems especially Pearl, who harbored her own feelings for Rose—Greg's presence became fundamental when Rose gave up her physical form to give birth to their half-human, half-Gem son, Steven. Raising Steven out of his van during his son's early childhood before building a beach house for him to live with the Gems, Greg always functioned as Steven's emotional anchor, providing vital human perspective, sound parental guidance, and a deep emotional connection often manifested through their shared musical talents. Despite his deep-seated anxiety and discomfort surrounding "magic stuff" and Gem warfare, he never hesitates to put on a brave face to support his son's universe-saving missions. Later Greg receives a $10 million royalty check after a song from his youth becomes a commercial jingle; yet, true to his humble nature, he maintains his simple lifestyle while using the wealth to support Steven's adventures, fund local art, and reconcile his long-strained relationship with Pearl. Known for his iconic mullet, tan lines, and signature catchphrase—"If every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs"—Greg is a beautifully flawed yet extraordinarily devoted father who teaches both humans and magical beings alike the profound power of empathy and personal growth.
