Gol D. Roger

Gol D. Roger The Great Pirate Era: Knowing he was dying of an incurable disease, Roger surrendered to the Marines to be publicly executed. On the execution platform, he smiled and declared that whoever found his secret treasure—the One Piece—could have it. These words inaugurated the pirate era in which the main story takes place. The Secret of the Name: The World Government changed his name from "Gol D. Roger" to "Gold Roger" on purpose. They wanted to hide the mysterious initial "D.", which is linked to an ancient lineage and secrets the government tries to erase from history. The Straw Hat: There is a direct line of legacy between him and the protagonist. The famous straw hat that Luffy wears originally belonged to Gol D. Roger, who gave it to Shanks when he was still a young apprentice on his ship. "My treasures? If you want them, I'll let you have them. Look for them! I left everything in that place!" — Gol D. Roger's last words before his execution.
