Edwin Black

Edwin Black is the "Progenitor" (the first vampire) and one of the absolute leaders of the Demon Realm. Unlike conventional vampires, he is immune to sunlight—considered a "Daywalker"—and presents himself as a tall, perfect, and extremely sophisticated businessman; in reality, however, he is a massive pervert driven by a thirst for power and a cold nature. He is the founder and supreme commander of NOMAD, a massive multinational criminal organization that dominates the underworld. Through NOMAD, he deals with demons, military biotechnology, and trafficking, serving as a corrupt bridge between the human world and the demonic realm. In the original visual novel lore, Edwin Black is portrayed as a nearly invincible force. Beyond his immense strength, dark magic, and absurd regenerative abilities, his ultimate power is the capacity to reset the universe. If he is "killed" (as happens in one of the bad endings of Taimanin Asagi 3), his powers trigger a cosmic restart—an event that, within the story, led to the creation of the Taimanin Asagi ZERO alternate timeline. Much of Edwin's storyline revolves around his desire to unify and completely dominate both the human and demonic worlds. Along the way, he develops an obsession with the ninja protagonist, Igawa Asagi. He commands the Chaos Arena and manipulates events from the shadows, attempting to break Asagi's will or use her body as a "vessel" for his schemes. Black has two known daughters in the franchise who also possess vampiric blood and lethal abilities—the cyborg samurai Shinganji Kurenai and the young vampire Felicia—though his relationship with them is, at best, neutral or slightly hostile. His right-hand woman, secretary, and loyal enforcer is the Hell Knight Ingrid. He also frequently employs the fallen ex-Taimanin Oboro—whether by turning her into a vampire, using clones of her, or positioning her as a representative of his dark interests. Edwin Black rarely acts like a rampaging monster. On the contrary, he adopts the persona of a perfectly polite, sophisticated, and charismatic billionaire CEO. He wears tailored suits, speaks calmly, and maintains his composure even during life-or-death battles. His sadism is refined; he prefers to shatter his enemies' minds and morale before destroying their bodies. He does not merely want to destroy the world; he wants to rule and unify it. His ultimate goal is to merge the Human World and the Demon Realm under his absolute dominion. He views himself as a god necessary to bring a "new order" to the chaos of both worlds. To Black, everyone is a chess piece. He rewards loyalty and competence (as seen with Ingrid, his loyal Knight of Hell), but discards allies and servants the moment they cease to be useful. He prefers to triumph through corruption, bribery, and blackmail rather than dirtying his own hands. Divine Strength and Speed: Physically, he surpasses any Taimanin or Demon Lord. He can crush steel with his bare hands, move at speeds the eye cannot track (appearing to teleport), and fight dozens of elite ninjas without breaking a sweat—often using only one hand while keeping the other in his trouser pocket. Immortality and Absurd Regeneration: Black is virtually immortal. If he is hacked to pieces, crushed, or incinerated, his body regenerates instantly. Lethal wounds mean nothing to him. Dark Magic and Elemental Control: He possesses vast reserves of demonic energy. He can fire blasts of destructive energy, summon hellfire, create impenetrable shields, and manipulate gravity or the matter around him. Mind Control and Vampiric "Charm": With just a glance or a word, he can brainwash weak-minded individuals, turning them into loyal servants. He can also transform humans into vampires or ghouls using his blood, creating instant armies. This represents the darkest financial arm of NOMAD in the original stories (visual novels). The organization abducts humans—focusing specifically on female ninjas (*kunoichis*) and captured Taimanins—to sell them to demons. These captives undergo brainwashing and bodily modification, and are auctioned off as sex slaves, test subjects, or war trophies to wealthy demon lords. Taimanins are considered luxury commodities due to their physical resilience and genetic powers, and are frequently used in schemes involving the forced breeding of hybrids. NOMAD runs a massive, secret underground coliseum. There, human billionaires, corrupt politicians, and nobles from the Demon Realm wager fortunes to watch deadly combat. Captured Taimanin, mercenary warriors, and monsters are thrown into the arena. The purpose is not merely violent entertainment, but the public breaking of the will of NOMAD's enemies; losers are subjected to physical humiliation and live torture, to the delight of the VIP bettors. The organization operates clandestine, high-tech laboratories where demonic biology is fused with human cybernetics. NOMAD profits by selling Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s) to dictatorships and cartels. They transform captured humans into ghouls and mindless cyborgs by implanting cerebral parasites. Edwin Black also employs mass cloning—most notably producing dozens of clones of the former Taimanin Oboro to serve as expendable shock troops and slaves. NOMAD synthesizes narcotics in the human world using ingredients from the underworld. Its catalog ranges from highly addictive military-grade stimulants to mind-altering drugs and extremely potent aphrodisiacs. These substances are used tactically to addict and blackmail world leaders, as well as serving as tools for interrogation and torture to break the psychological resistance of Taimanin agents attempting to investigate the company. NOMAD is not pursued by governments because it buys them off. The syndicate bribes heads of state, police chiefs, and high-ranking United Nations officials. They fund civil wars and profit from both sides by selling biological weapons and mercenary armies composed of demons. In exchange for money and access to the "pleasures" offered at NOMAD auctions, human nations turn a blind eye to the disappearance of thousands of civilians taken to the Demon Realm. As a vampire and demonic leader, Edwin Black treats the occult as a commercial enterprise. NOMAD brokers contracts in which powerful demons—unable to physically cross into the human world—purchase the bodies of healthy (or genetically superior) humans to serve as "vessels" for possession, allowing these entities to invade Earth while bypassing the laws of physics and magic.
