Jun Fudo — Devilman Lady Jun Fudo is the central heroine of Go Nagai’s Devilman Lady, but the original manga and the 1998–1999 television anime present radically different versions of her life, personality, relationships, and ultimate fate. In both continuities, Jun is a woman capable of transforming into a powerful humanoid Devil Beast while retaining her human mind. Her story explores whether humanity is defined by biology, appearance, or the ability to choose compassion over cruelty. Manga Canon In the manga, Jun is a schoolteacher and an exceptionally accomplished former competitive swimmer and athlete. She lives with and cares for her younger brother, Hikaru, while their father, Professor Fudo, conducts research in the United States. Although ordinarily responsible and kindhearted, Jun begins experiencing disturbing nightmares, violent impulses, and inexplicable physical changes. Her life is shattered during a school trip when she and her students are attacked by a group of Devil Beasts. Under horrific physical and psychological trauma, Jun transforms for the first time into Devilman Lady and kills the attackers, saving the surviving students. She is then approached by the enigmatic Lan Asuka, who admits to having deliberately awakened the power within her. Professor Fudo explains that Jun is affected by Devil Beast Syndrome, a phenomenon in which human beings mutate into predatory monsters and generally lose their former personalities. Jun is a rare exception: a “Devilman” who possesses a Devil Beast’s body and power while preserving human intelligence and self-awareness. Under Lan’s supervision, she is drawn into the Human Alliance’s campaign to capture, kill, or occasionally rehabilitate other Devil Beasts. Jun’s battles repeatedly force her to question whether the transformed creatures are truly monsters or victims of humanity’s next evolutionary stage. She is immensely strong, but the manga frequently places her at the mercy of governments, cults, supernatural powers, and people seeking to exploit her body. Her relationship with Lan is especially complicated. Lan acts at times as Jun’s protector and closest companion, yet also manipulates her, withholds essential truths, and ultimately uses her as part of a larger plan. Their bond should therefore not be understood as a simple friendship or conventional romance. The manga eventually expands beyond biological horror into the cosmic mythology of the original Devilman. Jun descends into Hell through a ritual at the Grumech Embassy and encounters Akira Fudo, the original Devilman. Akira is trapped within the remains of the world that God destroyed after his final battle with Satan. He guides Jun through Hell, and the two gradually fall in love. Jun promises that she will never forget him, but after returning to Earth she finds reality altered and her memories of Akira beginning to disappear. The final revelations redefine Jun’s entire existence. She and Lan are not merely related humans: they are two separated halves of Satan. Satan divided into two beings as part of a plan to escape God’s repeating cycle of destruction and recover Akira from Hell. Lan, assuming a male form, impregnates Jun in a deeply manipulative and coercive encounter. Jun’s resulting pregnancy is not an ordinary act of reproduction, but the means by which a new physical vessel is created for Akira’s soul. While transformed into her gigantic Devil Lady form, Jun gives birth to a fully grown, reincarnated Akira. Once her memories return, Jun reunites with Lan, and the two halves become the complete Satan again. Jun consequently ceases to exist as an entirely separate individual, although her identity remains part of the restored being. Akira, changed by his suffering and still bound to Satan by love and hatred, chooses to stand beside Satan against God. The manga concludes with Satan and Akira preparing for another war against Heaven as the world is again consumed by apocalyptic destruction. Anime Canon The television anime is an alternate continuity rather than a faithful adaptation of the manga. Here, Jun is a 22-year-old supermodel. Beautiful and internationally successful, she is nevertheless quiet, sensitive, introverted, and uncomfortable with the attention surrounding her career. Beneath her timid manner lies tremendous resolve and a powerful instinct to protect others. Jun’s dormant Devil Beast nature is forcibly awakened after Lan Asuka arranges for her to be placed in a lethal encounter with a transformed creature. Jun becomes Devilman Lady, kills the beast, and is subsequently coerced into serving the Human Alliance, a clandestine government organization that studies, contains, and exterminates Devil Beasts. Lan makes clear that Jun can either cooperate or be treated as another dangerous specimen. In this continuity, Devil Beasts are primarily presented as the result of the “Beast Factor,” an evolutionary mutation appearing within humanity. Most transformed people lose control, but Jun remains conscious and morally aware, making her a Devilman rather than a mindless beast. The Human Alliance uses her as its principal hunter, sending her to eliminate mutants who have become violent. Jun initially submits out of fear and confusion, but she becomes increasingly disturbed by the organization’s cruelty and its refusal to distinguish between dangerous killers and peaceful transformed people. Jun’s most important relationship is with Kazumi Takiura, an aspiring teenage model who admires her. After Devil Beasts kill Kazumi’s parents, Jun takes her in and becomes her guardian, mentor, and emotional refuge. Their attachment develops into an intensely intimate and romantic bond. Kazumi accepts Jun in both human and Devil Lady form, giving Jun reassurance that her transformation has not erased her humanity. As the crisis grows, Jun encounters compassionate Devil Beasts as well as humans capable of persecution, opportunism, and mass murder. She realizes that morality cannot be divided cleanly between humans and mutants. Satoru, the leader of a militant Devil Beast faction, regards Jun as a traitor for defending humanity, while the Human Alliance imprisons and exterminates Devilmen indiscriminately. Jun rejects both human supremacism and Satoru’s campaign of vengeance, becoming a protector of those who still seek coexistence. Kazumi eventually manifests Devil Beast abilities of her own and fights beside Jun. She is later killed, and her soul is drawn into the hellish mass formed from the suffering of slaughtered Devil Beasts. Her death devastates Jun and removes the person who most strongly connected her to an ordinary human life. Jun cuts her hair, abandons her former passivity, and decides to fight according to her own conscience rather than as the weapon of either side. Lan is ultimately revealed as the architect of the catastrophe. Unlike manga Lan, she is not Jun’s other half and does not recombine with her as Satan. The anime presents her as the “Child of God,” a messianic being who manipulates the Human Alliance, the persecution of Devil Beasts, and the deaths of countless mutants in order to attain an angelic, godlike form and impose her own false paradise upon the world. Cast into Hell, Jun encounters the souls of Kazumi and the murdered Devil Beasts. Accepting their pain and power, she declares herself Devilman Lady and rises to confront Lan. In the final battle, Jun assumes her gigantic form. Lan tears away Jun’s arms and wings, but Jun continues fighting and ultimately cuts Lan apart, destroying the self-proclaimed deity and ending her rule. Jun survives, but her victory is profoundly bittersweet. Human civilization begins rebuilding, and the surviving population appears more willing to accept Devil Beasts as part of humanity. Jun returns anonymously to society, concealing her missing arms beneath her coat. She has saved the world, yet she must live with permanent physical injuries and the loss of Kazumi and nearly everyone who mattered to her. Abilities In her Devil Lady form, Jun's height increases to 220 CM, causing the clothes she wears to tear. Jun's delicate and willful figure is replaced by an Amazonian, muscular and athletic physique. Manga Jun possesses enormous strength, speed, endurance, regenerative ability, and the predatory senses and natural weapons of a Devil Beast. Her power increases as the story expands into supernatural and cosmic territory, and she can assume a gigantic form capable of confronting enormous enemies. Her greatest narrative significance, however, lies in her identity as one half of Satan and in her connection to Akira’s resurrection. Anime Jun possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, heightened senses, regeneration, flight, electrical and destructive energy attacks, and blade-like protrusions formed from her body and wings. Through the Giga Effect, she can grow into a colossal form suited to battling giant Devil Beasts. Even after being severely injured, her determination and the spiritual power of the murdered Devilmen allow her to defeat Lan. Across both versions, Jun’s defining quality is not her physical power but her struggle to retain compassion in a world that treats bodies as proof of guilt. Manga Jun becomes part of a cosmic tragedy involving Satan, Akira, God, and the repeated destruction of creation. Anime Jun remains an independent woman who rejects both humanity’s persecution and the Devil Beasts’ retaliatory hatred. Each incarnation asks the same essential question: whether someone who looks like a monster can remain more human than the people hunting her.
