Denji is the main protagonist of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man: a poor, emotionally starved teenage boy who becomes the Devil-human hybrid known as Chainsaw Man after his pet Devil companion Pochita fuses with his heart. He begins the story as a brutally exploited nobody whose dreams are painfully simple—bread with jam, a girlfriend, a bed, a normal life—but his life becomes a cycle of intimacy, manipulation, fame, loss, and the search for a reason to keep living. Denji grows up in crushing poverty after inheriting his dead father’s debt to the yakuza. To survive, he sells body parts and works as an illegal Devil Hunter with Pochita, the dog-like Chainsaw Devil. The yakuza eventually betray him after making a contract with the Zombie Devil, murdering Denji and mutilating his body. Pochita saves him by becoming his heart, forming a contract: Denji must show Pochita his dreams. This transforms Denji into a hybrid who can become Chainsaw Man by pulling the starter cord in his chest. After slaughtering the Zombie Devil and the yakuza, Denji is found by Makima, a Public Safety Devil Hunter who offers him food, shelter, and employment—but also effectively ownership. Denji accepts because even basic human kindness is new to him. In human form, Denji is a lean teenage boy with messy blond hair, sharp teeth, tired eyes, and a rough, neglected appearance that reflects his impoverished upbringing. He usually dresses casually or in Public Safety’s suit-and-tie uniform. His most distinctive human feature after becoming a hybrid is the rip cord protruding from his chest, which activates his transformation. As Chainsaw Man, Denji’s head becomes a demonic chainsaw-shaped helmet with a jagged metal mouth and a chainsaw blade extending from his forehead. Chainsaws also emerge from his arms, turning his body into a close-range massacre weapon. In Pochita’s true Chainsaw Devil form, the design becomes far more monstrous, armored, and overwhelming. Denji is crude, impulsive, horny, undereducated, and emotionally immature—but he is not stupid. He is direct, adaptable, and often surprisingly perceptive when survival or emotional pain forces him to be. His early goals are deliberately small: touching a girl’s chest, eating good food, sleeping in a real bed. That simplicity is part of his tragedy. Denji was so deprived that ordinary human comfort feels like heaven. Underneath the vulgarity, Denji is deeply lonely and desperate to be loved. He is easy to manipulate because he has almost no experience with genuine affection. Makima exploits this completely. Over time, Denji develops real bonds with Aki and Power, learns grief, and slowly realizes that “normal life” is more complicated than physical pleasure or obedience. By Part 2, Denji has become more self-aware but still unstable. He wants to be Chainsaw Man because it gives him recognition, attention, and a sense of identity. He loves Nayuta and tries to be a guardian to her, but he is torn between domestic happiness and the addictive validation of being a superhero. Denji is a Devil-human hybrid. His powers come from Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, acting as his heart. His core abilities include: Chainsaw transformation: Pulling the cord on his chest turns him into Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw weaponry: Chainsaws emerge from his head and arms, giving him devastating cutting power. Regeneration: Denji can recover from horrific injuries by consuming blood. He can survive damage that would kill ordinary humans. Hybrid immortality: Like other weapon hybrids, Denji can be revived under the right conditions even after apparent death. Superhuman physical ability: As Chainsaw Man, he gains enhanced strength, speed, durability, stamina, and pain tolerance. Combat improvisation: Denji often wins through insane, ugly, creative tactics—using his chainsaws as grappling tools, setting himself on fire, cutting his own brain to resist psychological attacks, or exploiting enemies’ assumptions. Pochita’s erasure ability: The true Chainsaw Devil can erase Devils—and the concepts they embody—by devouring them. This is the terrifying power Makima covets. Denji does not normally wield it with full conscious control; it belongs primarily to Pochita’s true form. Pochita: Denji’s first real friend and emotional foundation. Pochita loves Denji unconditionally and becomes his heart. Their contract is the soul of the series: Pochita wants Denji to live and pursue his dreams. Makima: Denji’s boss, idol, crush, mother figure, and abuser. She gives him comfort while controlling him like a dog. Her true goal is not Denji himself but Chainsaw Man/Pochita. She destroys Denji’s found family to break him. Aki Hayakawa: Initially Denji’s hostile superior, Aki becomes an older-brother figure. Their bond grows into one of the story’s most important emotional relationships. Denji being forced to kill Aki as the Gun Fiend is one of his deepest traumas. Power: Denji’s partner, roommate, and chaotic best friend/sister-like companion. Their bond begins selfishly but becomes genuine, especially after Power’s trauma from Darkness Devil. Her death at Makima’s hands devastates Denji. Reze: A girl Denji falls for during the Bomb Girl arc. She appears to offer Denji escape and romance, but she is actually the Bomb Devil hybrid sent to capture him. Their relationship is tragic because her feelings for him seem to become real, even though she betrays him. Kishibe: A brutal mentor who trains Denji and Power. He later helps oppose Makima and entrusts Denji with Nayuta. Nayuta: The reincarnated Control Devil after Makima’s death. Denji raises her as family, trying to prevent her from becoming another Makima. Their domestic life becomes Denji’s new “normal,” making her central to his Part 2 identity. Asa Mitaka / Yoru: Asa becomes Denji’s major Part 2 counterpart. She is lonely, awkward, morally conflicted, and possessed by the War Devil, who wants Chainsaw Man dead. Denji and Asa’s relationship mixes comedy, romance, manipulation, and shared alienation. Denji begins as a yakuza debt slave killing Devils with Pochita. After the Zombie Devil incident, he becomes Chainsaw Man and joins Public Safety under Makima. He works with Aki and Power, fighting threats such as the Bat Devil, Eternity Devil, Katana Man, and other enemies tied to the Gun Devil. Denji’s emotional world expands through his relationships. He learns that physical intimacy alone does not satisfy his deeper longing for connection. Makima keeps him emotionally dependent by offering affection and sexual promises as rewards. After the Katana Man arc, Denji meets Reze. Their relationship briefly suggests escape from Public Safety and Makima, but Reze is revealed as the Bomb Devil hybrid. Denji defeats her, yet still wants to run away with her. Makima prevents this, reinforcing her control over Denji’s life. The International Assassins arc exposes Denji’s global importance: everyone wants Chainsaw Man’s heart. The Darkness Devil, Quanxi, Santa Claus, and other forces reveal that Denji is caught in a much larger supernatural power struggle. The Gun Devil arc destroys Denji emotionally. Aki becomes the Gun Fiend, and Denji is forced to kill him. Makima then reveals her true nature as the Control Devil and murders Power in front of Denji. Her goal is to break Denji’s contract with Pochita by making Denji unable to dream. Pochita takes over Denji’s body as the true Chainsaw Man. Eventually, Denji defeats Makima through a plan involving Power’s blood and his own understanding of Makima’s psychology. Rather than attacking her as an enemy, he eats Makima as an act of love, bypassing her contract-based defenses. Afterward, Kishibe gives Denji Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil, and Denji becomes her guardian. Denji enters high school while secretly continuing as Chainsaw Man and raising Nayuta. He wants people to discover his identity so he can become popular, especially with girls, but Yoshida and Public Safety try to keep him under control. Asa Mitaka becomes the second major protagonist after forming a contract with Yoru, the War Devil. Yoru wants to defeat Chainsaw Man and recover what Chainsaw Man erased. Asa and Denji’s relationship develops awkwardly, with Asa unaware at first that Denji really is Chainsaw Man. Denji becomes trapped between his desire for a peaceful life with Nayuta and his craving to be Chainsaw Man. The Chainsaw Man Church, Fami, Barem, and other forces manipulate his image and push him toward disaster. Barem destroys Denji’s home and kills his pets, pushing Denji into another spiral of rage and grief. Nayuta is seemingly lost, and Denji is later captured, dismembered, and treated as a resource rather than a person. As the conflict escalates around War, Death, Fami, Asa, and Pochita, Denji’s identity crisis reaches its final form: is he Denji, Chainsaw Man, Pochita’s vessel, a hero, a weapon, or just a boy who wanted a normal life? Near the end, Pochita recognizes that becoming Denji’s heart also bound Denji to terrible trauma. Pochita chooses to erase himself, creating a new reality where Chainsaw Man never existed. In the final reality, Denji again reaches the moment where the Zombie Devil should kill him—but this time Power appears and saves him. Nayuta, now connected to Public Safety, recruits Denji and Power as Devil Hunters. Denji later meets Asa in a world where she is no longer possessed by Yoru. A remnant of Pochita still seems to stir when Asa calls him Chainsaw Man, leaving Denji with an altered but hopeful continuation: no longer the same Chainsaw Man of suffering, but still Denji.
