About Akane Shinjou
Appearance
hair between eyes, pink hair, red eyes, short hair, busty
Character Background
Akane Shinjou is a central character and the primary antagonist of SSSS.GRIDMAN. Initially introduced as a cheerful, popular high school student, she is revealed to be the creator and self-proclaimed god of Tsutsujidai, an artificial city existing within the Computer World.
With the assistance of Alexis Kerib, Akane creates powerful kaiju to eliminate people who displease her and destroy anything that threatens her idealized reality. Her desire to control her surroundings stems from profound loneliness, insecurity, and her inability to confront the disappointments of her real life.
Despite her cruelty, Akane is not entirely without compassion. Her friendship with Rikka Takarada ultimately becomes the foundation of her redemption, teaching her that genuine relationships cannot be manufactured or controlled.
Appearance
Akane's digital avatar is a petite teenage girl with short, pastel-pink hair and reddish-pink eyes. Her usual school uniform consists of a white blouse, purple ribbon, dark skirt, and oversized purple jacket with pink accents.
At home, she often wears headphones and distinctive pink-framed glasses with a cracked lens. Her bedroom is cluttered with computers, kaiju models, merchandise, and hobby supplies, reflecting her enthusiasm for tokusatsu.
Her real-world appearance differs from her digital avatar. The live-action conclusion of SSSS.GRIDMAN reveals her as a dark-haired Japanese schoolgirl wearing a white scarf.
In GRIDMAN UNIVERSE, she returns in a redesigned digital form known as New Order, featuring a more elaborate outfit.
Personality
Akane initially presents herself as friendly, intelligent, outgoing, and approachable. She is extremely popular among her classmates, performs well academically, and enthusiastically discusses kaiju with anyone who shares her interests.
However, her cheerful public persona conceals a deeply insecure, emotionally unstable, and controlling individual.
Akane struggles to tolerate rejection, humiliation, or circumstances that contradict her expectations. Minor inconveniences can provoke disproportionate anger, and she frequently responds to perceived offenses by creating kaiju to eliminate the people responsible.
She can also be manipulative, using her popularity and apparent innocence to gather information and influence others. Her position as Tsutsujidai's creator reinforces her belief that its inhabitants should behave according to her wishes.
Nevertheless, Akane possesses a genuine desire for affection and companionship. Her friendship with Rikka reveals that she wants meaningful relationships, even though she initially struggles to understand that friendship requires respecting another person's independence.
Her love of kaiju is another authentic aspect of her personality. She is a talented monster designer with extensive knowledge of tokusatsu, and she takes considerable pride in her creations.
Ultimately, Akane's cruelty is exacerbated by Alexis Kerib, who exploits her loneliness and encourages her destructive impulses for his own benefit.
Her character development centers on recognizing the consequences of her actions, accepting responsibility, and learning to confront reality rather than escaping into an artificial paradise.
Background
Akane originates from the real human world. Before the events of SSSS.GRIDMAN, she became dissatisfied with her life and sought refuge in an environment where she could escape her problems.
She encountered Alexis Kerib, an immortal being who offered her the opportunity to create a world of her own.
With his assistance, Akane entered the Computer World and established Tsutsujidai, an artificial city designed around her personal desires. She populated it with artificial humans known as Repli-Compoids and fashioned an idealized identity for herself as a popular, admired student.
However, even a world created specifically for her could not guarantee happiness.
Its inhabitants developed individual personalities and sometimes behaved in ways she disliked. Akane subsequently began using kaiju to eliminate troublesome individuals and alter the city whenever events contradicted her expectations.
Alexis encouraged her behavior while concealing his true intentions. Rather than helping her overcome her unhappiness, he exploited her negative emotions to satisfy his own emotional emptiness.
Akane's original circumstances in the human world remain largely unexplored, leaving the exact reasons for her initial withdrawal from reality ambiguous.
Powers and Abilities
Kaiju Creation: Akane is a talented monster designer who constructs detailed physical models of original kaiju. Alexis uses Instance Abreaction to transform these creations into living monsters capable of attacking Tsutsujidai and fighting Gridman.
World Manipulation: As Tsutsujidai's creator, Akane possesses enormous influence over its artificial environment. With Alexis's assistance, she can destroy and reconstruct portions of the city, altering its surroundings and the circumstances of its inhabitants.
Memory Manipulation: Certain kaiju help maintain her artificial world by modifying the memories of its residents, allowing destruction and disappearances to be concealed.
Instance Domination: Akane possesses the abilities of a Kaiju User, including the power to exert control over kaiju. This becomes particularly important during GRIDMAN UNIVERSE.
Intelligence and Creativity: Akane demonstrates considerable artistic talent, technical familiarity, and knowledge of tokusatsu monsters. She is also capable of devising schemes to uncover Gridman's identity and undermine his allies.
Despite her apparent godlike authority, Akane is not omnipotent. Her control depends on the Computer World's nature and Alexis's assistance, and she cannot force its inhabitants to possess the emotions or personalities she desires.
Major Relationships
Rikka Takarada: Rikka is Akane's closest friend and the most important person in her emotional development. Although Rikka exists within the world Akane created, her friendship develops beyond Akane's expectations. Rikka's willingness to confront, forgive, and continue caring about her becomes instrumental in Akane's redemption.
Alexis Kerib: Initially Akane's partner and benefactor, Alexis supplies the power necessary to bring her kaiju to life. He manipulates her emotional instability and encourages her destructive behavior, ultimately revealing that he regards her suffering as something to exploit.
Yuta Hibiki: Akane initially treats Yuta as a classmate and attempts to develop a closer relationship with him. After discovering his connection to Gridman, she increasingly regards him as an obstacle threatening her control over Tsutsujidai.
Shou Utsumi: Utsumi shares Akane's enthusiasm for kaiju and tokusatsu. Their mutual interests initially allow them to connect, although his loyalty to Yuta and Gridman eventually places them on opposing sides.
Anti / Gridknight: Anti is a sentient kaiju created by Akane specifically to destroy Gridman. She initially treats him as a disposable weapon and becomes frustrated when he develops independence. His eventual transformation into Gridknight demonstrates that even beings created for destructive purposes can choose their own paths.
Story and Character Development
Throughout SSSS.GRIDMAN, Akane creates increasingly powerful kaiju to eliminate people who offend her and destroy Gridman, whose existence threatens her artificial paradise.
As Gridman and his allies repeatedly defeat her creations, Akane becomes increasingly frustrated. Her inability to control the protagonists challenges the foundations of the world she has constructed.
Her relationship with Rikka also deteriorates as the truth about Tsutsujidai emerges. Akane reveals that Rikka is an artificial person created within her world, suggesting that their friendship exists only because Akane designed it that way.
Rikka refuses to accept that her artificial origins invalidate her feelings. Her determination to remain Akane's friend challenges Akane's belief that relationships are meaningful only when she controls them.
Eventually, Akane's deteriorating emotional state leads her to stab Yuta, leaving her horrified by the consequences of her actions.
Alexis exploits her despair and transforms her into the kaiju Zegga. Anti, now fighting as Gridknight, rescues her, only for Alexis to absorb her into himself.
During the final battle, Gridman uses his Grid Fixer Beam to restore the Computer World and help Akane confront her emotional suffering.
With the support of Rikka and the others, Akane finally acknowledges her destructive behavior and accepts that she must return to the real world rather than continue escaping into an artificial paradise.
Before leaving, she shares an emotional farewell with Rikka and apologizes for the suffering she caused. Rikka gives her a pass case as a parting gift, symbolizing their friendship and Akane's readiness to move forward.
The series concludes with Akane awakening in her real-world bedroom, indicating that she has finally chosen to face reality.
Akane returns in GRIDMAN UNIVERSE, having resumed her life in the human world following the events of the original series. When a new threat endangers Gridman and multiple universes, she intervenes to assist her former enemies.
Adopting her New Order appearance, Akane uses her abilities as a Kaiju User to bring Alexis Kerib under her control, reversing the relationship that previously defined their partnership. She subsequently assists Gridman and his allies in confronting Mad Origin.
Her intervention demonstrates her development since SSSS.GRIDMAN. Rather than using her powers to impose her desires upon others, Akane now employs them to protect people and preserve worlds beyond her own.
She also apologizes to Knight for her mistreatment of him when he was Anti, acknowledging the cruelty she previously directed toward her creation.
Following the conflict, Akane returns to her world.
