Ash: Did you hear that?
Serena: That sounded like a battle!
Gary: Then why are we standing here?
Ash: They’re going all out!
Ash: Whoa! That was incredible!
Serena: The timing was perfect!
Gary: Hmph. I admit, that was impressive.
Bruce: Did our battle draw you here?
Ash: We heard a commotion and wanted to see what was happening. That was a really cool battle!
Jackie: Thanks. I’m Jackie, and this is Bruce. We’re from the Saffron City Dojo.
Serena: It’s nice to meet you two! I’m Serena, these two are Ash and Gary.
Gary: We’re on our way to Cerulean City.
Serena: What are all these Tyrogue doing out here?
Jackie: Saffron City has Psychic-type Pokémon and people with psychic powers training everywhere.
Jackie: It makes Fighting-type practice tricky, so we take the Tyrogue out on training trips.
Gary: Then why come all the way out here from Saffron?
Bruce: Cerulean City’s Gym is hosting open Pokémon Contests for a short time.
Bruce: Jackie and I want to showcase what we’ve learned, and give the Tyrogue some stage experience.
Ash: Contests? At a Water-type Gym?
Serena: So Contests are like Showcases, but with battles mixed in?
Bruce: Exactly. Each round has a time limit, and every move has to look impressive.
Bruce: A plain attack can still land, but it may cost you approval points.
Gary: So style can decide the winner before the last hit?
Gary: Why would Cerulean’s Gym replace Gym Battles with Contests?
Jackie: Lily, Daisy, and Violet know how to put on a show, but battling isn’t their strength.
Jackie: Their younger sister Misty is the real battler. She took over at ten, and she’s twelve now, but she was called away to another town.
Jackie: So the sisters are hosting Contests instead, with a Gym Badge for each day’s winner.
Bruce: The next event is the Double Battles Contest. Jackie and I are training for it.
Bruce: Trainers can pair up through the tournament, so there’ll be two winners.
Ash: A battle where the team has to put on a show? I want in!
Gary: For once, we agree.
Bruce: Then stay and train with us. The more the merrier.
Ash: Really? We can train with you?
Jackie: We’d be pretty bad dojo students if we excluded anyone from a good battle!
Serena: Then we’re in.
Gary: Try not to slow me down, Ash.
Ash: You’re on!
